Tim Andriesen led CME Group’s agricultural commodities business line—not the company as a whole. Named Managing Director, Agricultural Commodities, in 2009, he was responsible for the product line’s global business and sales strategy. His career brought together 16 years of cash-grain trading and later work in over-the-counter (OTC) commodities and banking.
What was Tim Andriesen’s role at CME Group?
CME Group announced Andriesen’s appointment on August 18, 2009. The company tasked him with developing and executing global business and sales strategy for its agricultural commodities product line. He reported to Barry Goldblatt in Chicago. CME Group’s appointment announcement described his experience in both OTC and listed agricultural commodities as relevant to customer solutions for risk management and price discovery.
In a 2013 interview with Successful Farming, Andriesen explained that his work concerned the business line: understanding its products, deciding what to offer, keeping existing products relevant, and managing the business. That remit was distinct from the clearinghouse’s management of risk between counterparties and from the trading itself. The interview is a useful account of how he described the job at the time; it should not be read as a description of CME’s current organization.
How did his career combine grain trading and finance?
Andriesen grew up in Rantoul, Illinois, and graduated from Southern Illinois University. He said he entered the grain business and spent 16 years trading cash grain with processors, cooperatives, and farmers. He then moved into finance, trading OTC products on the banking side in the United States and Australia. His degree was a bachelor’s in marketing, with a specialization in international business. The 2013 interview provides his account of the early career; CME’s 2009 announcement supplies additional employment history.

Earlier roles included commodities and commodities sales work in Sydney and New York, as well as senior risk-management and agricultural-trading positions with Zurich Capital Markets, Louis Dreyfus Corporation, Rabobank International, and Koch Industries. The CME Group 2010 Annual Report also lists “TIMOTHY J. ANDRIESEN” as Managing Director, Commodity Products, a further historical record of his work at the company.
How did Andriesen explain the link between futures and options?
In the 2013 interview, Andriesen explained the relationship through hedging. Options market makers, he said, need to hedge price risk, and futures provide a market in which to lay off that risk. In his view, it is therefore difficult to have an options product without a futures contract. He said CME’s futures markets enabled products including standard options, short-dated new-crop options, weekly options, and options on spreads for different months. These are his explanations from 2013, not a current assessment of market liquidity or product availability.
