Some familiar brands have products assembled or manufactured in China, even when the brands are associated with another country. Apple’s supply-chain page identifies iPhone assembly in mainland China, and Mattel’s 2023 annual filing lists China among its principal manufacturing countries. Neither source establishes where every product or individual item was made. Apple’s supply-chain page and Mattel’s 2023 Form 10-K support different, limited claims—not a definitive country-of-origin list for everything these companies sell.
What “made in China” can mean
A company may operate factories in China, assemble a particular product family there, source components there, or sell an individual item whose label names China as its country of origin. These are distinct claims. Evidence about a company’s overall manufacturing footprint does not establish the origin of a specific model or retail unit.
The examples below are limited to what the companies’ cited materials establish. They are not a ranking, a complete list of brands with China production, or a comparison of product quality.
Familiar brands with documented China manufacturing activity
Apple: iPhone assembly in mainland China
Apple’s supply-chain page labels “iPhone assembly, China mainland.” That supports the statement that iPhone assembly takes place in mainland China; it does not establish that every iPhone model, component, or unit sold in every market is made there. The same page describes supplier and manufacturing activity across multiple countries, so China is one part of a wider supply chain. Apple’s supply-chain page

Apple also reports supplier-program figures for 2025: 655K+ supplier employees directly engaged about workplace experiences, 6.9K+ workplace improvements made based on employee feedback, and 42K+ supplier employees contacted after interviews to check that they had not experienced retaliation. These are company-reported figures, not counts of Chinese workers, factories, or products, and the page does not present them as independently verified. Apple states on that page: “Apple does not tolerate forced labour.” That is the company’s policy statement, not a finding about a named factory or specific product.
Mattel: a company-level footprint across five countries
Mattel’s 2023 Form 10-K, filed in 2024, says its principal manufacturing facilities are in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and Thailand. This is a dated, company-level description of its manufacturing footprint—not a current item-by-item country-of-origin list. Mattel also says it concentrates production of most core products in company-owned facilities and generally uses third-party manufacturers for non-core products. The filing does not identify the origin of a particular Barbie or other individual toy. Mattel’s SEC filings

Why brand ownership alone is not enough
NIKE, Inc.’s official company page identifies Nike, Jordan, and Converse as its brands, but it does not state where their products are manufactured. That establishes brand ownership, not China production. Without evidence tied to a particular product, model, or manufacturing claim, it would be inaccurate to label Nike, Jordan, or Converse products as made in China on the basis of that page. If the question is where one item was made, look for item-level evidence rather than relying on the brand’s headquarters or overall factory network.

- Check the item and its packaging. Look for a country-of-origin marking on the product, label, box, or other packaging.
- Match the evidence to the exact item. A brand-wide statement or a reference to one product family may not apply to a different model, size, production run, or unit.
- Read the wording carefully. “Assembled in China” supports an assembly claim; it does not mean every component originated there. A company’s list of manufacturing countries establishes a footprint, not the origin of an unspecified product.
- Use dated, first-party records where available. Company supply-chain pages and regulatory filings can show what a company reports, but their scope and date matter. A filing describing a company’s facilities in 2023 should not be treated as proof of a particular item’s origin in 2026.
