MRF’s business began in 1946 with toy balloons in a shed in Tiruvottiyur, then part of Madras. By 1949, the company says it was making latex cast toys, gloves and contraceptives. It later moved into tread rubber and tyres. The claim that MRF has “India’s most expensive stock,” however, needs a dated share-price comparison and is not verified by the company sources cited here.
MRF started as a balloon unit in 1946
MRF traces its origins to a toy-balloon manufacturing unit started by K. M. Mammen Mappillai in a shed in Tiruvottiyur, Madras, in 1946. That is the account in the company’s official history.
By 1949, MRF says it was making latex cast toys, gloves and contraceptives, and had opened its first office at 334 Thambu Chetty Street in Madras, now Chennai. The unusual product mix reflects the company’s early work with latex; it was not yet a tyre manufacturer.
How MRF moved from latex goods to tyres
The company’s history describes a gradual shift from latex products into rubber materials and then tyres:

- 1952: MRF entered tread-rubber manufacture.
- 1956: MRF says it had become India’s tread-rubber market leader, with a 50% share. This is the company’s retrospective claim about that year, not a current market-share figure.
- 1961: MRF became a public company, formed a technical collaboration with Mansfield Tyre & Rubber Company of the United States, and released a tyre from its new pilot plant at Tiruvottiyur.
Those milestones are recorded in MRF’s company history. The first tyre marked a change in what the business made: from then on, MRF’s growth was tied to the automotive tyre industry rather than its initial balloon and latex-goods operation.
What MRF makes today
MRF’s investor-relations page describes its business as manufacturing and selling automotive tyres, tubes and flaps. Its current stated business is therefore far removed from the toy-balloon unit with which it began. For current product and company information, see MRF’s investor-relations page.

That depends on what “expensive” means. In this headline, the phrase would ordinarily refer to nominal price per share. It does not mean MRF is India’s largest company by market capitalization, nor does it show whether its valuation is high relative to its earnings or assets.

A claim that MRF has the highest share price among Indian listed stocks needs a dated comparison across a defined set of shares. Share prices change, and the company’s history, investor-relations pages and financial results do not provide that comparison. The ranking should therefore be treated as unverified here, not as a current fact. MRF’s reported revenue and profit cannot substitute for dated market-price data.
