Madhya Pradesh raised the general retirement age for state-government employees from 60 to 62 in 2018—not in a newly established 2026 announcement. A January 15, 2026 Madhya Pradesh High Court order recounts that Ordinance No. 4 of 2018 replaced “sixty years” with “sixty-two years.” The change should not automatically be applied to employees of corporations, local bodies, or the subordinate judiciary, whose rules or approval processes may differ.
What is the retirement age for Madhya Pradesh government employees?
For state-government employees covered by the 2018 change, the retirement age rose from 60 to 62. Amar Ujala reported the announcement on March 30, 2018, and the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s January 15, 2026 order later described Ordinance No. 4 of 2018 as replacing “sixty years” with “sixty-two years” for state-government employees. Read the contemporaneous report; read the High Court order.
The 2018 news report said the decision would benefit 40% of employees. That figure is the report’s claim; the reviewed sources do not provide an official calculation to independently verify it, and it should not be treated as a current workforce statistic.
Does the 62-year age apply to corporation and local-body employees?
Not automatically. The High Court’s account of an April 27, 2018 Finance Department circular says corporations and local bodies were given liberty to raise their employees’ retirement age from 60 to 62 by amending their own service and recruitment rules. The circular said those bodies should consider their financial condition and need. An employee’s coverage therefore depends on the employer’s rules and whether it formally adopted the change.

Tourism Development Corporation example
The High Court order describes a separate path for Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation employees. The corporation decided on March 31, 2018 to raise the retirement age to 62 for Class I, II, and III employees; the state approved that decision on July 29, 2021. This history illustrates why employees of a particular corporation should check its applicable rules and approval rather than assume the general state-government change applied immediately. See the order’s account of the corporation’s decision.
What about subordinate judicial officers?
Subordinate judicial officers are a distinct category, not automatically covered by the general 62-year age. In an order dated May 26, 2025, the Supreme Court addressed a possible increase to 61, stating that it found no impediment to the State of Madhya Pradesh and the Madhya Pradesh High Court permitting such an increase if the applicable rules allow it and the High Court decides to do so. That order did not extend the general state-government retirement age of 62 to judicial officers. Read the Supreme Court order.

How to check which retirement age applies to you
- Identify your employer. Distinguish a state government department from a corporation, local body, or judicial service.
- Check your employee class and governing service rules. The corporation example covers specified classes; do not assume it establishes coverage for other classes or employers.
- Look for the formal amendment or adoption. For corporations and local bodies, the High Court’s account says their service and recruitment rules may need amendment. Confirm the relevant rule and its effective date with your employer.
- Ask the employing department or establishment office to confirm your individual rule. The original Gazette instrument and current service-specific rules are not reproduced in the cited pages, so a general news account is not enough to settle an individual retirement date.
When did Madhya Pradesh raise the retirement age from 60 to 62?
The change dates to 2018. The contemporaneous report was published on March 30, 2018, and the High Court’s 2026 account identifies Ordinance No. 4 of 2018. The 2026 date belongs to the later court order recounting the policy history, not to a new general increase.
