That is a historical estimate, not a current net-worth disclosure: the available evidence does not establish his present assets, debts, taxes, or personal share of the Rolling Stones’ business.
What the $289 million figure means
The often-cited figure comes from Guinness World Records’ 2010 estimate. It describes Richards’s estimated fortune at that time; it is not an audited account, and it should not be presented as a current valuation. No recent, independently documented personal balance sheet was identified that would support a current figure.

Online estimates published more recently may look precise, but a newer date alone does not make a number reliable. Without documented information about assets and liabilities—and a defensible accounting of what belongs to Richards personally—such estimates cannot establish his net worth.
Why Rolling Stones revenue is not Richards’s net worth
The band’s commercial success provides context for how its members may have built wealth, but group revenue is not an individual member’s take-home income or fortune. Fortune reported in 2002 that the Rolling Stones had generated more than $1.5 billion in gross revenue since 1989. That band-level total covered records, song rights, merchandise, sponsorship, and touring; it was not a valuation of Richards’s personal assets.

Forbes’s 1989 reporting described several elements of the Stones’ business around the Steel Wheels tour, including a $70 million guarantee for tour promotion rights, potential ticket receipts, merchandising, sponsorship, record and catalog arrangements, and songwriter royalties. These are historical examples of the band’s revenue channels, not a statement of Richards’s net proceeds. Costs, contractual splits, taxes, personal spending, and investments all separate gross business activity from an individual’s net worth.
“All this vast amount of money is generated by sitting down with this little wooden instrument.”

Richards made that remark in Forbes’s 1989 feature. It captures the contrast between songwriting and the scale of the band’s commercial operation; it is not a personal accounting disclosure.
Songwriting, publishing, and solo work
Songwriting and publishing are relevant to Richards’s earning history, but the available reporting does not establish his current ownership percentages in publishing or master rights, or how much he receives from royalties today. In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Richards said he and Mick Jagger had not discussed selling the catalog seriously and that he did not know whether they were ready to sell. Those comments describe the discussion at that time; they do not disclose ownership shares or establish current plans or a catalog valuation.
Rank #3
Richards also has a documented solo career, including records with the X-Pensive Winos and reissues covered in a 2020 Rolling Stone interview. That coverage provides career context, not earnings figures. No current Richards-specific breakdown of tour income, royalties, property, investments, debt, or taxes is established by the cited reporting.
