What happened to Frank Zhang’s PC Optimum account?
MobileSyrup reported that Zhang discovered he could not redeem points in January 2025. The outlet described the balance as 43 million points, worth approximately $43,000. Those figures are reported by the news outlet, not confirmed by a public account statement.

According to MobileSyrup, an automated online help tool first advised Zhang to change his password. When he called customer support, he was told he had breached PC Optimum’s terms, but was not told which rule. The report later relayed Loblaw’s explanation to CBC Go Public: the company said it had evidence Zhang was buying commercial or resale items. Zhang denied wrongdoing and questioned why the company would not provide proof of the alleged purchases.
The account descriptions differ by stage: the report says Zhang was initially locked out, relays that Loblaw suspended the account, and says the company later removed it. These are not interchangeable descriptions of the account’s status. The accessible reporting does not resolve the disagreement over the alleged purchases or show the evidence behind Loblaw’s explanation.

What is known about the separate Jeff Mack case?
MobileSyrup also reported that Calgary resident Jeff Mack had 1.5 million points, described as worth $1,500, frozen after an allegation that he held multiple accounts. Mack disputed the allegation and said he had not been shown proof linking him to another account. The reporting does not establish the outcome of his case. It is a separate anecdote, not evidence that similar freezes are common.
How do the reported balances compare with typical PC Optimum earning?
PC Optimum’s legal-information page says that, as of July 2024, app users who primarily open and shop offers through their online account earn an average of 200,000 points per year and have more opportunities to optimize personalized offers. That is a program-page statistic, not an independently audited benchmark or evidence about Zhang’s spending. The account balances reported by MobileSyrup should not be treated as independently verified by that average.

What did Canada’s Privacy Commissioner find about PC Optimum?
In findings announced March 5, 2026, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said Loblaw took an unreasonable amount of time to address some PC Optimum account-deletion requests and failed to answer some privacy-related inquiries. The Commissioner also found that purchase histories were retained after account deletion and that removing direct identifiers was not enough to demonstrate adequate protection against re-identification. Loblaw agreed to an independent review of its anonymization process and any necessary risk mitigation. The Commissioner said PC Optimum had more than 17 million members in Canada.
Those findings concern privacy practices and deletion requests, not Zhang’s account suspension or the alleged resale activity. They do not determine whether Loblaw was justified in restricting his account.

Does the reporting say whether Zhang got the points back?
No outcome is established in the accessible MobileSyrup report. It does not say whether Zhang regained account access or recovered the points, so the reported $43,000 should not be described as definitively lost or permanently forfeited.
