A Delhi court granted bail on 7 October 2024 to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav in the Enforcement Directorate’s money-laundering case linked to alleged land-for-jobs appointments. Reports said each furnished a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and that the court ordered passports surrendered. Bail allowed them to remain out of custody in this proceeding; it was not a ruling that the allegations were true or that the accused were guilty.
What the ED alleges in the land-for-jobs case
The ED says its investigation grew out of a CBI first information report concerning alleged corruption in appointments of Group-D substitutes in Indian Railways while Lalu Prasad Yadav was Railway Minister, from 2004 to 2009. The agency alleges that candidates were asked to transfer land as a bribe for appointments, and that parcels were transferred to family members or associates for nominal amounts. These are the ED’s allegations, not findings established at trial. The ED’s 27 September 2024 release says it filed a supplementary prosecution complaint on 6 August 2024 against Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and others; the Special Court took cognizance on 18 September and issued notices for appearance on 7 October.
What the court decided on 7 October 2024
Contemporaneous reports say the three appeared in response to summons after the court took cognizance of the supplementary complaint. The court granted bail, noting that they had been chargesheeted without being arrested. Akashvani reported personal bonds of ₹1 lakh each and an order to surrender passports; The Indian Express also reported the bond amount.
The reports differ on the next hearing date: Akashvani said 25 October 2024, while The Indian Express reported 23 and 24 October. Without the underlying court order, neither date should be treated as definitive.

After the ruling, Lalu Prasad Yadav told reporters, “We believe in the judiciary.” Tejashwi Yadav said, “We believe in the judiciary and the court has granted us bail today. They often indulge in political conspiracy, and misuse the agencies. The case has no merit, and our victory is confirmed.” Those are statements by the accused, not findings by the court.
Why bail does not decide the allegations
Bail is a procedural decision about release from custody while a case proceeds. The reported order did not establish whether land was exchanged for appointments, determine guilt, or dispose of the ED prosecution. The bail ruling should therefore be read separately from the merits of the allegations.
How the ED proceeding differs from the CBI track
The ED’s money-laundering case and the CBI matter are related in the reported account but are distinct proceedings. The ED says its investigation arose from a CBI FIR; the October 2024 bail order described here concerns the ED prosecution. A March 2026 newspaper report said Lalu Prasad Yadav was out on bail while reporting that the Delhi High Court dismissed his plea to quash the CBI FIR. That later report concerns the CBI track and does not establish the continuing terms or status of the separate ED bail order.
The ED also issued an earlier release in January 2024 describing a separate, earlier prosecution complaint that named Amit Katyal, Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti, Hema Yadav, Hridyanand Chaudhary and two companies. In that release, the agency said searches on 10 March 2023 resulted in seizure of approximately ₹1 crore in cash and valuables equivalent to approximately ₹1.25 crore, and that immovable properties worth ₹6.02 crore were provisionally attached on 29 July 2023. These are figures reported by the ED, not independent valuations. The agency’s release describes that earlier complaint; it should not be mistaken for the supplementary complaint that led to the 7 October 2024 appearance.

A Delhi court order dated 10 September 2026 surfaced in reporting about alleged manipulation of IRCTC hotel tenders and transfer of Patna land. That is a separate prosecution from the land-for-jobs matter described here, which concerns alleged Group-D appointments in the West Central Railway Zone. The cases, allegations and court orders should not be treated as interchangeable.
