The Guardian reported that the group considered its offer too high in light of the findings; the consortium’s public statement also blamed the club’s historic mishandling and underinvestment.
What caused the withdrawal?
The immediate trigger reported by The Guardian was the consortium’s review of an additional PwC due diligence report. A spokesperson said: “The figure we offered is significantly higher than that justified by the findings of a lengthy due diligence process.” That is the group’s explanation of its decision, not an independently published account of every finding in the report.
In its withdrawal statement, reported by the BBC, the consortium said: “The historic mishandling of the club and pattern of catastrophic underinvestment means our sizeable binding bid can no longer be justified.” The statement described the group’s view; it should not be treated as a separate audit finding.
What did the reports say about the money?
Coverage used two different figures for the proposed deal. They describe the transaction differently and should not be treated as interchangeable confirmed totals.

The consortium also said it had spent more than £4m helping to run the club over the preceding two months, according to the BBC. That was the group’s claim in its withdrawal statement, not a separately verified figure in the report.
Were stadium maintenance problems the reason?
Sky Sports reported stadium maintenance concerns as a possible key factor in the withdrawal. That is reported context, not a confirmed quotation from the consortium or proof that maintenance was the sole cause. The direct explanation attributed to the group was that the due diligence findings did not justify the amount offered, alongside its public criticism of the club’s historic mishandling and underinvestment.

What happened to the sale process next?
After Bord’s group withdrew, Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators continued the sale process. The club announced on 10 March 2026 that Arise Capital Partners LLC had been selected as preferred bidder, naming David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as members of the group. The club said Arise’s offer was below the amount needed to repay creditors 25p in the pound, but was the strongest proposal received after the renewed process. See the club’s official update.
In a report published on 11 March, the BBC said the offer could trigger a 15-point deduction in League One because it did not meet the EFL creditor repayment threshold. That was a reported possible sporting consequence, not a guarantee that the deduction would be imposed. Being named preferred bidder is also not the same as completing a takeover. The cited club update establishes the preferred-bidder announcement, not the eventual ownership outcome.
