You can take clear, useful product photos with a smartphone, window light and a simple backdrop. Set up near a window, keep the background clean, steady the camera, and photograph the item from the angles a shopper needs to judge its appearance, size and use. You do not need a dedicated camera or studio to get started.
What you need to get started
Begin with the camera you already have. Shopify says a smartphone can produce good product photos without professional-level equipment. Amazon recommends a newer phone with a 12-megapixel camera or more, but that is guidance—not a universal minimum or a guarantee of image quality.
- A phone or camera, with its lens clean.
- A table near a window.
- White poster board or paper for a simple background.
- A white card or foam board to reflect light into shadows.
- Optional: a phone tripod for steadier, repeatable framing.
These basics are consistent with Shopify’s home product photography guidance and its phone photography guide.
How to take product photos at home
- Prepare the product and shooting area. Clean the item and camera lens. Clear clutter from the table and anything visible in the frame. Arrange the product so its important features face the camera.
- Set up a simple background. Place white poster board or paper on the table and curve the far end up behind the product to make a continuous sweep. Secure it with tape or clamps. Leave enough room beside the item for a reflector. White is a useful catalog starting point because it keeps attention on the product; you can add lifestyle images later.
- Use window light. Put the table near a window and start with the window to one side of the product. Turn off other room lights if they give the scene a noticeably different color. Avoid harsh direct sunlight; if the sun is too strong, soften it with a diffuser or a thin sheet placed between the window and the product.
- Lift dark shadows with a reflector. Place white foam board or a sheet of white paper opposite the window so it bounces some light back onto the shadowed side. Move it closer or farther away until the shadows are softer without making the product look flat.
- Frame and focus. Turn off flash. Keep the camera steady, tap the product to focus on a phone, and adjust exposure if your camera app allows it. A tripod can help reduce shake and keep framing consistent across multiple items, but it is optional if you can hold the camera steadily.
- Take a useful set of views. Capture a clean overall view first, then add relevant close-ups, alternate angles, a scale reference or an in-use scene. Choose these based on what a shopper would want to know: texture, closures, included parts, dimensions or how the item is used. Amazon’s ecommerce photo guidance discusses listing image types; its marketplace recommendations are not a substitute for checking current rules for your own sales channel.
- Review the actual images. Zoom in to check sharpness and inspect the full frame for glare, distracting shadows, inaccurate color, cropped edges or hidden details. Retake a frame if the image does not clearly show the product as it is.
- Edit and export carefully. Make modest exposure or background corrections, but do not alter the product’s color, shape, condition or included features. Resize and compress images as appropriate for the destination, then follow that site’s current file and dimension requirements.
Choose the setup for the job

Keep the product accurate and the listing compliant
A photo should help a shopper understand the actual item, not create a misleading impression. Use extra views to show details that are difficult to judge from the main image, and keep edits limited to presentation rather than changing what the customer will receive.

Amazon’s seller article reports an image range of 500–10,000 pixels on the longest side and lists JPEG, TIFF, PNG or non-animated GIF as accepted formats. It also recommends at least six images while requiring at least one. These are Amazon-specific specifications that can change; check the current Seller Central rules before uploading.
