Kim Stephen, co-founder and creative director of Arcade Agency Hospitality, died suddenly at 40, PerthNow reported on 28 November 2025. The report did not state a cause of death. Tributes came from Light Years, his fiancée Peta Van De Velde, friends and people in the Byron Bay community.

Stephen was co-founder and creative director of Arcade Agency Hospitality, the group behind Light Years. PerthNow described him as central to the group’s creative identity.
How Light Years and Arcade Agency responded
Light Years paid tribute to Stephen in an Instagram post, describing him as “the man whose spirit and creativity defined so much of who we are,” as quoted by PerthNow.

Van De Velde, identified by PerthNow as Stephen’s fiancée, said: “Kim was my partner in life and in business. We will carry on building the empire Kim started, honouring his legacy and his creative genius that shaped it.” This was her statement about the business’s future.
Tributes from the Byron Bay community
PerthNow also reported tributes from friends and members of the Byron Bay community. Leonie Hemsworth, whom the report identifies as a community member and the mother of Liam and Chris Hemsworth, recalled Stephen’s presence in the community and his love of music. These remarks reflect individual tributes, not a measure of community-wide opinion.

Light Years began in Byron Bay in 2017 and later expanded to Newcastle, Noosa and Burleigh, according to PerthNow. Its Perth restaurant opened on 11 April 2025 at 140 William Street, in the historic Gordon Stephenson House. Cbus Property’s announcement gave the opening date and location and described Perth as Arcade Agency’s Western Australian debut.
The sudden loss of a creative leader so soon after the Perth opening was reported has drawn attention to the people and businesses shaped by Stephen’s work. The available accounts establish the reported death and tributes, but do not give a cause.
