Applications had to be postmarked or received by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) by that date. The deadline and the August 14, 2025 recognition ceremony have passed; the 2025 application window is closed.
What the Iowa farm recognition programs honor
IDALS and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation created the program to recognize Iowa farm families with long-term family ownership. Eligibility is based on the continuous ownership of at least 40 acres of the original Iowa farmland, not necessarily the entire acreage of a present-day farm.
| Recognition | Family ownership period | Shared conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Century Farm | At least 100 consecutive years | At least 40 acres of the original Iowa holding; the present owner must be related to someone who owned the land 100 years earlier. |
| Heritage Farm | At least 150 consecutive years, by the end of the application year | At least 40 acres of the original holding; the present owner must be related to someone who owned it 150 years earlier. |
These eligibility requirements are described on the IDALS Century and Heritage Farm Program page.
How the application process worked
For the 2025 cycle, applicants needed to complete the appropriate application, print it, and provide an original notarized signature. IDALS’s program directions say applications are due by June 1 of the application year. The 2025 announcement specified that applications had to be postmarked or received by June 1, 2025. See the current program page and application directions for current-cycle instructions and mailing details.

IDALS reviews submissions and notifies applicants by mail whether they were approved or declined. Ceremony information is mailed to the contact person in late June, according to the agency’s application directions.
2025 ceremony and recognition totals
The 2025 ceremony was scheduled for August 14 at the historic Livestock Pavilion during the Iowa State Fair. IDALS subsequently reported that 449 farm families were recognized: 246 Century Farms and 203 Heritage Farms. These are the numbers recognized that year, not application totals or an estimate of how many farms statewide were eligible. IDALS’s August 14, 2025 announcement gives the results.

For farmers considering a later application
The 2025 deadline and ceremony are historical. For a later cycle, use IDALS’s program page for current forms, eligibility directions, deadlines, and mailing information rather than relying on an old announcement. IDALS’s February 18, 2026 announcement describes a subsequent application cycle, confirming that dates vary by year: 2026 application announcement.
