How Rich Is Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn? What the $30 Billion Estimates Actually Mean

Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn is often linked to wealth estimates of $30 billion or more. Here’s what those figures count—and why they are not a verified current net worth.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, known as Rama X, is often described as one of the world’s richest monarchs, with estimates of at least $30 billion. But no cited source establishes a precise, audited figure for his current personal net worth. The widely repeated number refers to different asset categories in different sources, so it should not be treated as a confirmed 2026 balance-sheet value.

What the $30 billion figure measures

Two prominent sources use a figure around $30 billion, but they do not describe the same thing:

Source and date Figure What it refers to
Forbes valuation, reported by Reuters in 2018 More than $30 billion Crown Property Bureau holdings in real estate and other investments, valued in 2012—not a confirmed valuation of the King’s personal wealth. Reuters report
Guinness World Records reference entry, accessed in 2026 At least $30 billion An estimate of the King’s personal wealth. The entry does not establish an audited valuation date. Guinness World Records

These numbers should not be added together. One is a 2012 estimate of bureau holdings; the other is a reference-record estimate of personal wealth without a stated audited valuation date.

Why estimates of the King’s wealth are disputed

Thailand distinguishes personal, crown and public assets

A 2012 Thai government response to Forbes objected that the magazine included Crown Property Bureau assets in its calculation of the King’s personal wealth. It described a distinction between “His Majesty’s personal assets,” “crown property” and “public property,” and argued that bureau assets were held in trust for the nation. That statement represents the government’s position, not a neutral adjudication of the dispute. Thai government response published by Forbes

Control and registration changed

Reuters reported that a 2017 legal change gave the King full control of the Crown Property Bureau. In 2018, the bureau said assets previously registered to it would be held “in the name of His Majesty.” Those developments describe changes in control and registration; they do not establish the portfolio’s current market value or resolve how every asset should be classified for a personal net-worth calculation. What can—and cannot—be concluded

The Crown Property Bureau’s official website is an institutional source, but it does not provide a current consolidated balance sheet or valuation that would settle the question. Crown Property Bureau

  • It is reasonable to describe Vajiralongkorn as a monarch whose estimated wealth is commonly placed at or above $30 billion.
  • It is not supported to present that amount as a precise, audited current personal net worth.
  • A change in legal control or asset registration does not, by itself, reveal current market value or prove that all holdings should be counted as personal property.

How to assess a wealth estimate

Before comparing a reported figure with another estimate, check what it counts and when it was calculated:

  1. Identify the asset category. Does the figure cover personal assets, Crown Property Bureau holdings, or public property?
  2. Check the date. A valuation of bureau holdings from 2012 is not a current valuation.
  3. Look for the type of evidence. An estimate or reference-record entry is not the same as an audited disclosure.
  4. Separate ownership from control or registration. A change in who controls or whose name appears on assets does not automatically provide a valuation or settle their classification.
