How to Earn $140,000 a Year and Live on an Island

A $140,000 income may support island living, but gross pay, household needs, local housing and work-location rules determine whether it fits.

You can earn $140,000 while living on an island, but whether that income is enough depends on whether it is gross or take-home pay, which island you choose, and your household’s costs. The most realistic routes are a remote job or contract work that the employer permits from your destination, or a locally available professional role. Before choosing either, confirm the pay, work-location rules, taxes, housing, healthcare, transport and connectivity for the specific island.

First, define what “$140,000” means for your budget

If $140,000 is gross annual income, it is not the amount you can spend: taxes and any payroll deductions reduce take-home pay. If it is after-tax income, more of it is available for household expenses. The difference matters before comparing islands or deciding whether a salary is sufficient.

There is no reliable universal monthly budget for “an island.” A useful estimate needs at least the destination, household size, housing arrangement and income figure after taxes. Tax, healthcare and insurance eligibility can also depend on the jurisdiction and your circumstances, so verify those locally rather than assuming a mainland arrangement carries over.

Choose an income path that works from the destination

Remote employment or contract work

National wage data can help identify occupations where average pay is near the target, but it does not show that a particular job is remote or that you will qualify for it. In the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2025 national wage table, software developers had a mean annual wage of $148,100, while the broader group of software and web developers, programmers and testers averaged $139,850. These are occupation-wide U.S. averages, not salary offers or guaranteed remote pay (BLS May 2025 occupational wage table).

Before accepting or relocating, get clear answers from the employer about where you may work. Confirm that the job can be performed from the specific island, and that payroll, tax and employment arrangements permit it. For contract work, assess how dependable the client pipeline and payment schedule are; a high annualized rate is not the same as stable annual income.

Employment on the island

Local wages and job availability can differ substantially from national averages. In Urban Honolulu, BLS reported May 2025 mean hourly pay of $49.70 for computer and mathematical occupations, $63.26 for management, $62.04 for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations, and $34.59 across all occupations. Those figures are means for broad occupation groups, not pay for every role in them, and they do not indicate whether a position is remote (BLS Urban Honolulu wages, May 2025).

Look at the actual openings, qualifications, benefits and wage distribution for the island you have in mind. A national average near $140,000 can help you identify fields to investigate, but it cannot establish that the same role is available locally or pays similarly there.

Build a destination-specific budget before deciding whether it is comfortable

For a Hawaii budget, the IRS’s housing-and-utilities category illustrates how much more than rent or a mortgage belongs in the calculation: it includes property taxes, interest, insurance, maintenance, repairs, fuel, electricity, water, garbage, phone service, cable and internet. This is a category list used in IRS collection standards, not a personalized cost estimate (IRS Hawaii Local Standards: Housing and utilities).

For a fuller household budget, United for ALICE’s Hawaii Household Survival Budget framework includes housing, child care, food, transportation, healthcare, technology, taxes and a 10% miscellaneous category. It is a framework for estimating basic survival costs, not a measure of what it takes to live comfortably (United for ALICE Hawaii Household Survival Budget).

Use local listings and quotes to estimate recurring costs, then add expenses that depend on your own routine and household. For example, family size can change housing, childcare and healthcare needs; a remote worker may also need to evaluate internet service and backup options. Do not treat a single island-wide or national average as a substitute for checking the actual place and home.

Check island-specific constraints, not just the salary

Housing availability and access

Income cannot solve every availability problem. The Scottish Islands Survey 2023 reported low housing availability relative to local demand across island regions, and only one in five respondents considered flights reliable. These are findings about surveyed Scottish islands, not a description of every island or a guarantee about a particular route (Scottish Islands Survey 2023 main findings).

The same survey found that 28% of respondents worked in more than one paid job or business in 2023, compared with 20% in 2020. That describes survey respondents; it does not show that island residents generally need multiple jobs. It is a reason to examine local employment patterns and income stability rather than infer them from a single salary benchmark.

Prices, transport and connectivity

Remote locations can face higher costs or more limited access, but the scale depends on the island. A Scottish Government assessment described local convenience-store costs as 44% higher than mainland equivalents and 27% higher than equivalent island-supermarket products. Those comparisons apply to the Scottish context covered by the assessment and should not be used as a universal “island surcharge” (Scottish Government Islands Communities Impact Assessment).

Check the costs and reliability that matter to your own life: groceries and deliveries, travel to essential services, flights or ferries, and internet and electricity. A broadband statistic can offer context, but it cannot guarantee service at a particular address. For example, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that 94.8% of households in Island County, Washington had a broadband internet subscription in 2020–2024; that county figure is not a service guarantee or a current listing for any individual home (Census QuickFacts: Island County, Washington).

Use local benchmarks carefully

Island County, Washington offers one U.S. comparison point: Census QuickFacts reports a median household income of $90,551, median gross rent of $1,662 and median owner-occupied home value of $593,300 for 2020–2024. These county-level statistics provide context; they do not show what a specific household would spend or prove that $140,000 is enough or insufficient for a particular home.

Likewise, a “comfortable” budget is personal. Decide what comfort means for your household—such as savings, travel, healthcare, childcare or home ownership—then price those items for the exact destination. Separate recurring expenses from one-time relocation costs so a seemingly workable monthly budget does not conceal a large move-in or setup bill.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Specify the destination and household. Name the island, household size, housing preference and any major care or education needs.
  2. Convert income to spendable income. Establish whether $140,000 is gross or net, then account for taxes, payroll deductions and benefits under the rules that apply to your situation.
  3. Verify the work arrangement. For remote work, obtain confirmation that the employer permits work from that jurisdiction and check payroll and tax handling. For local work, compare actual roles and local pay rather than relying on national averages.
  4. Price housing and essentials locally. Include utilities, insurance, maintenance, healthcare, food, transport, connectivity and travel based on current options available to you.
  5. Test reliability and access. Consider what happens if housing is unavailable, a route is disrupted, or internet or electricity is interrupted, especially if your income depends on being online.
  6. Set your own comfort threshold. Decide how much you want to save and which discretionary expenses matter, then compare that plan with realistic take-home pay and recurring costs.
