How do I get a refund for a digital Xbox game?
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used to make the purchase.
- Open the Microsoft Store apps and games refund guidance and follow its link to Xbox Support’s digital-game refund request flow.
- Select the game or app, choose Request a refund, give the reason for the request, and submit it.
- Check Xbox order history for the request’s status.
Microsoft says processing a request may take up to 72 hours. That is an estimate for processing, not a guarantee of approval or a promise that the money will already appear in your account.
What if the refund option is unavailable?
Online returns are unavailable in some markets. Microsoft directs customers who cannot request a refund online to Sales support. Microsoft also says it will not accept returns for purchases made from another retailer, and that a single item from a bundle cannot be returned. Check the applicable local consumer protections as well; Microsoft’s guidance notes that Australian consumer-law remedies are not affected by its return information.
Can I get a refund for a digital Xbox game?
You can submit a request through Xbox Support, but the available Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal approval rule or exact Xbox-specific eligibility thresholds for purchase age, play time, or other criteria. Do not assume that a commonly repeated deadline or play-time limit applies to every purchase. Review the criteria shown in the live refund flow and consider any consumer rights that apply where you live.

Microsoft’s general policy for digital goods in its PC refund section is not a substitute for the separate Xbox refund rules. Likewise, Microsoft’s general subscription terms should not be treated as proof of Xbox game eligibility.
How do I cancel Xbox Game Pass and check whether I can get a refund?
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Open Microsoft’s subscription cancellation guidance and follow the steps for the subscription.
- Review the cancellation options and any refund eligibility shown for your account, then submit the cancellation if that is what you want.
Microsoft cautions that “Not all cancellations will result in a refund.” Cancelling stops or changes the subscription according to the option shown; it is not itself proof that a refund has been approved.

If the subscription is already set to expire, you may see Turn on recurring billing. Microsoft says that means it will not automatically renew and you can continue using it until its expiry date. That option turns renewal back on; it does not request a refund.
Microsoft’s general subscription policy describes refund terms for the subscriptions covered by that page, including circumstances involving the first 30 days or first recurring billing date. But Microsoft directs Xbox subscribers to a separate Xbox cancellations and refunds page. Do not rely on the general terms as confirmed Xbox-specific rules; use the Xbox flow and the terms shown for your subscription and country.

What if I bought the subscription through Apple or Google?
Use the store that charged you. Microsoft says subscriptions purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play must be managed through the relevant store, including cancellation or refund support. The Microsoft Xbox refund route is for purchases made through Microsoft, not a third-party seller.
Where can I check my Xbox refund status?
For Xbox game and app refunds, check Xbox order history. Keep the request-processing estimate separate from the time it takes for a payment to show up: Microsoft says an issued refund may take a few days to post, depending on the bank or payment provider. Its support guidance gives a general estimate of 3–5 business days after an issued refund is applied to the original payment option; your provider’s posting time may differ.

What should I do about an unfamiliar Xbox charge?
If you do not recognize a charge, investigate it through Microsoft’s payments and account guidance before treating it as a refund request. Microsoft provides a route for reviewing unrecognized charges, but an unfamiliar charge is not automatically refundable; first determine what account or purchase it relates to.

How to stop Xbox subscription recurring billing
Use the cancellation flow for the Microsoft account that owns the subscription and check the displayed status. If you see Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft says automatic renewal is off and access continues through the shown expiry date. If Apple or Google billed the subscription, manage renewal through that store instead.
