To sell videos online, decide what customers are paying for—one-time access, a rental, a live event, or a subscription—then choose a platform that supports that model and calculate what you will actually keep after fees. For a first-time seller, Vimeo OTT, Patreon, and Gumroad are useful options to compare, but they serve different needs. Vimeo On Demand is scheduled to shut down on November 20, 2026, so it is not a durable choice for a new business.
Choose what the customer is buying
The product determines both the buyer’s experience and the way you earn revenue. Before uploading a video, decide whether customers need ongoing access, a single viewing window, a downloadable file, or access to an event.
- Purchase: A customer pays once for a title. Depending on the service and setup, access may mean streaming, downloading, or both.
- Rental: A customer pays for temporary access. Vimeo OTT describes rentals as streaming for a set period without direct downloads.
- Pay-per-view: Viewers pay to watch a live event or a collection of past live events.
- Subscription: Members pay on a recurring basis for access to a video library or other benefits. This works best when you can keep adding material or otherwise sustain the membership.
Write down what the buyer receives, how long access lasts, and whether downloads are allowed. Those details affect platform fit, customer expectations, and the fees you need to model.
Compare platforms by fit, not by headline fee
The evidence available for these services supports a practical comparison of four options, not a current, authoritative ranking of 11 platforms. Their published fees are not directly interchangeable: one may charge by transaction, another by subscriber, and another at a higher rate for marketplace-discovered sales.

Estimate your take-home revenue before setting a price
A platform’s advertised percentage is only one part of the calculation. Depending on the service and sale, account for payment processing, taxes, currency conversion, payout costs, hosting, and transcoding. Also identify whether the fee applies to the full sale amount, the remaining revenue after other deductions, each transaction, or each subscriber per month.
- Choose a sale type and price. Model the real product—such as a $20 one-time purchase or a monthly membership—not an abstract average.
- Apply the platform’s fee on its stated basis. For example, Vimeo OTT’s listed TVOD/EST terms are 10% plus $0.50 per transaction, while its SVOD terms include a monthly per-subscriber fee and, when Vimeo processes payment, a transaction percentage and fixed charge.
- Add costs that may be separate. Include payment processing, applicable tax, currency conversion, payout charges, and video hosting or transcoding when relevant.
- Check the buyer’s payment route. Patreon notes possible iOS charges, and checkout method can affect what is deducted.
- Calculate more than one scenario. Estimate a small sale volume and a realistic higher volume, especially for subscriptions with recurring per-subscriber fees.
Vimeo’s On Demand Help Center says creators keep “90% of gross revenue after transaction costs,” but its fee explanation also accounts for taxes and Vimeo’s share. That figure should not be read as a universal 90% payout on every customer payment. Its stated transaction costs range from 4% to 17%, depending on price, payment method, and currency. Set up the video offer and storefront
1. Define the offer
Specify the title, price, format of access, rental duration if applicable, and whether customers can download the video. For a subscription, explain what the membership includes and how often viewers can expect new material. Avoid promising an access method the platform or product setup does not support.
2. Match the service to the offer
Use a service with documented support for the model you need. Vimeo OTT has documented transactional sales, rentals, live pay-per-view, subscriptions, and streaming/download options that vary by product. Patreon documents one-time purchases through its Shop and memberships. Gumroad supports digital products, but the cited pricing page does not establish video-specific streaming protection or access controls.

3. Confirm costs and delivery details
Review the current terms for fee basis, hosting and transcoding charges, tax handling, payout timing and costs, currency conversion, and any platform-specific checkout fees. For Vimeo OTT, hosting and transcoding costs depend on uploaded video length. For Patreon, verify the account’s plan and checkout route rather than assuming one fee applies to every creator and buyer.
4. Prepare the listing and test the buyer path
Use a clear title and description, state exactly what access the purchase provides, and verify the price and checkout flow before promoting it. Confirm that a buyer can reach the video as intended and that the permitted viewing or download behavior matches the listing.
Which platform makes sense for a beginner?
- Choose Vimeo OTT if you need a video-focused service with documented rentals, purchases, live pay-per-view, subscriptions, and branded website or app options. Include its model-specific service fees and hosting/transcoding costs in your budget.
- Choose Patreon if you already have or are building a fan community and want one-time sales of exclusive media alongside recurring memberships. Verify your fee plan, payment processing, and checkout route.
- Consider Gumroad if you are selling a digital product such as a course or tutorial and its current delivery functions suit the video experience you want. Do not assume that its published pricing page establishes streaming-only delivery or library access controls.
- Avoid building a new long-term offer on Vimeo On Demand without accounting for its scheduled November 20, 2026 shutdown. Vimeo currently recommends Vimeo OTT to people starting to sell videos.
