The safest route depends on what you’re selling. For recognizable bullion, compare direct buyback quotes from several dealers; for sterling or scrap, first confirm the buyer accepts that material; for collectible coins, seek a buyer who evaluates numismatic value. Marketplaces can put an item in front of individual buyers, but you take on listing, shipping, payment, and dispute-management work. There are six supported routes below—not seven: current reliable information establishes four named bullion dealers and two marketplaces, and the marketplaces are not suitable for every silver item.
Choose the selling route by the kind of silver you have
Start by sorting your items into three broad groups. A visible stamp or description can help identify an item, but it does not by itself prove authenticity, purity, or value.
- Bullion: recognizable silver bars, rounds, and common bullion coins. Direct dealer buyback is usually the most straightforward route to a quote and defined verification and payment steps.
- Sterling or scrap: jewelry, silverware, or other items primarily valued for metal content. Check that the buyer accepts that form and ask how it will be evaluated.
- Collectible or numismatic silver: coins or other pieces whose value may depend on rarity, condition, or demand as well as metal content. Ask whether a dealer will consider the item as a collectible, rather than quoting only for its silver.
For a marketplace sale, document the actual item with clear photographs and accurate descriptions of its composition, purity, brand or mint, and weight where applicable. A direct dealer quote reduces the amount of buyer and payment management you handle, but the offer and terms still need to be checked item by item.
Six online routes and what each is suited to
| Route | Best fit | What to verify before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| APMEX buyback | Bullion and certain numismatic, semi-numismatic, rare-coin, and collectible items. | Current eligible products, quote and lock period, shipping instructions, verification, and settlement terms. APMEX describes online quoting, prepaid insured shipping through APMEX Logistics, verification on arrival, and payment. Its page says the company has purchased more than $2 billion of product from the retail market; that is an APMEX-reported figure, not an independent rating or payout comparison. APMEX Sell to Us |
| Kitco buyback | Bullion products listed for sale through Kitco’s process. | Whether the item is listed, whether to book a price now or later, and which payout methods and fees apply in your country. Kitco describes a prepaid shipping label and payment after receipt and verification. Kitco Sell to Us · Kitco payment FAQ |
| SD Bullion buyback | Items accepted through its dealer buyback process. | Call to lock the trade, then read the binding-order, cancellation, market-loss, packaging, and carrier drop-off terms before agreeing. SD Bullion describes ACH and a wire option with a stated fee; shipping labels may be requested. SD Bullion Sell to Us |
| JM Bullion Sell To Us | Bullion and, subject to its process and eligibility, jewelry, scrap metal, and silverware. | Ask for the initial quote and confirm accepted items, shipping cost, and current processing terms. JM Bullion’s terms say payment is generally issued within 3–7 business days after processing, subject to stated exceptions; shipping costs are the seller’s responsibility. Treat this as the company’s stated timing, not a guaranteed end-to-end sale time. JM Bullion Sell To Us · JM Bullion accepted items |
| eBay listing | A seller willing to create and manage an individual listing and handle the sale through the platform. | Follow the current bullion policy. eBay prohibits replica, counterfeit, plated, or clad bullion and requires accurate content, purity, and brand, along with photographs of both sides and any assay card or certificate. Some qualifying sterling jewelry may fall under Authenticity Guarantee, but it is not a blanket guarantee for all silver. eBay Bullion Policy · eBay Authenticity Guarantee for jewelry |
| Etsy listing, conditionally | Only a specific silver item that fits Etsy’s seller and listing rules; it is not a general bullion-buying service. | Etsy says listed items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, and sellers must represent items accurately and comply with applicable laws. Check the current policy and the item’s eligibility before listing. Etsy Seller Policy |
How to compare offers without losing time or money
Dealer prices can move with the silver market, so request comparable quotes close together in time. Compare the amount you would actually keep—not just the headline offer—and check the terms before locking a trade.
#1 Best Overall
- ✔️1 oz 2026 American Silver Eagle Coin
- ✔️Obverse: Adolph A. Weinman’s design of Lady Liberty wrapped in the American flag and elegantly striding over a ridge while the sun rises.
- ✔️Reverse: One eagle flying into land while carrying an oak branch in its talons.
- Acceptance: Does the buyer accept your exact item, condition, quantity, and form of silver?
- Net proceeds: Subtract shipping costs and payment or other fees from the offer. Note who pays for shipping.
- Price lock: Find out when the quoted price expires and whether accepting it creates a binding sale.
- Shipping: Check whether the dealer requires its label, a particular carrier, or a specific drop-off method. Confirm what coverage applies under that company’s terms.
- Verification and payment: Identify what happens after the parcel arrives, which payment methods are available to you, and when payment is issued.
- Work and risk: A dealer handles the quote and verification process, while a marketplace seller prepares the listing and manages buyer communications, payment flow, shipping, and possible disputes.
No route is established as universally fastest or highest-paying. The best choice depends on your item and the current net quote and terms.
Steps to sell and ship safely
- Identify and document the items. Sort bullion, sterling or scrap, and collectibles separately. Record visible markings and the actual quantity or weight, and photograph the items before packing. Do not treat a stamp alone as proof of authenticity.
- Get comparable offers. Contact multiple dealers close together in time, ask whether each accepts your item, and compare net proceeds, price-lock timing, shipping rules, and settlement terms. If considering a marketplace, check its current policies and eligibility requirements first.
- Read the full shipping and sale terms before committing. A quote lock may bind you to a transaction. Understand cancellation or market-loss terms and follow the buyer’s specific packaging, label, carrier, and drop-off instructions.
- Pack and retain records. Follow the buyer’s instructions, keep the drop-off receipt and tracking information, and save your quote, item photographs, and packing record. A digital shipping scale can help estimate postage from the parcel’s packed weight; it does not establish silver purity or value.
- For a marketplace sale, keep the transaction on-platform. Use actual-item photographs and accurate descriptions, communicate and receive payment through the platform’s process, and confirm that payment appears as cleared in your account before dispatch. Do not rely on an email or screenshot as proof. Use trackable delivery where the platform’s seller-protection rules require it.
- Keep the completion records. Retain the quote or listing, photographs, packing details, tracking, and settlement confirmation until the transaction is complete.
What “quickly” can—and cannot—mean
A dealer route can avoid the wait for an individual marketplace buyer, but it still involves quote timing, shipping, receipt, verification, and payment. JM Bullion’s stated 3–7 business days applies generally to payment after processing, not the entire period from first contact to money received. Kitco, APMEX, and SD Bullion describe their own steps, so use each company’s current terms rather than assuming identical timelines. Marketplace timing depends on finding a buyer and completing the platform’s payment and delivery process; the available evidence does not establish a reliable average sale time for these routes.
