A Prime Day discount is worth considering only if the price is competitive for the exact item and its recent history—not just because a badge says “% off.” Check Amazon’s price history, compare the same configuration at other retailers, and decide whether the current total meets a price you chose in advance.
How to check whether a Prime Day price is genuinely good
- Check the item’s Amazon price history. On eligible product pages, look for the price-history link. Amazon says the view can show up to 365 days of pricing data and may identify whether the current offer is a 30-, 90-, or 365-day low. Availability and history depth can vary by item. A recent low is useful context, but it does not by itself prove the price is best elsewhere.
- Compare the exact item at other retailers. Search by model number and match size, color, bundle, and configuration. Compare the current total, including shipping and any coupon that applies. A lower competing price—or a price that has been common for weeks—makes a large advertised discount less compelling. WIRED’s Prime Day advice also cautions against relying on inflated MSRP language.
- Check what the reference price means. Amazon distinguishes List Price, a validated suggested retail price, from Typical or “Was” Price, which is based on recent customer purchases on Amazon. - Cross-check with a price tracker. CamelCamelCamel and Keepa can provide another view of price history. Their charts are not complete records: some deal types, including certain Lightning Deals, may be missing, and trackers can have gaps. Compare more than one source when the history looks incomplete or conflicts with the product page. WIRED discusses the limits of price trackers.
- Judge the price against your own target. Set a maximum price before browsing. A countdown, limited-time label, or claimed percentage off does not establish that an item is worth buying. Use the history and comparable offers to decide whether the price meets your target.
How to compare offers without mixing unlike prices
Two listings are comparable only when they describe the same product and buying terms. Before treating another retailer’s price as evidence, check these details:
- Product: Match the model and configuration, including size, color, included accessories, and bundle contents.
- Condition and seller: Compare new with new, and check who is selling the item. A marketplace listing or a different condition may not be equivalent to the offer you are considering.
- Total cost: Include shipping and any coupon you can actually use. A displayed price may not be the checkout price.
- Price history: Note the time window shown. A 30-day low and a 365-day low answer different questions; neither guarantees the same price is available from another seller now.
- Availability and budget: Confirm the offer is available to you, then compare the total with the maximum you set before the event.
What Amazon’s price labels can—and cannot—tell you
Amazon’s consumer guidance describes List Price as a validated suggested retail price. Typical or “Was” Price reflects recent customer purchases on Amazon. These are different reference points, but neither substitutes for checking actual prices over time and comparing equivalent offers elsewhere. Amazon’s published explanation of Typical Price describes a 90-day median and says limited-time deal prices are excluded; that is Amazon’s description of its policy, not an independent assessment of whether a deal is good.
Amazon’s seller-facing announcement describes changes to its reference-price calculations in 2026. It says that, effective April 23, List Price validation requires the product to have been recently offered at that price by another retailer or purchased as Amazon’s Featured Offer at that price. It also describes Typical Price as the 90-day median non-promotional price and a change effective May 18, 2026, under which promotional sales are included if more than half of the days in the 90-day history fall below the non-promotional median. How much confidence to put in price-history tools
Amazon says eligible product pages can show up to 365 days of history and selected 30-, 90-, or 365-day lows. It also offers price alerts through Alexa for Shopping. The history is useful evidence, not a promise that every offer or price movement appears in every view. Amazon reports that more than 50 million customers have used its price-history tool; that is Amazon’s own usage claim, not an independent measure of the tool’s accuracy or the savings shoppers achieve. Third-party charts are also helpful checks rather than infallible records. WIRED notes that some deal types may be absent from tracker history and recommends cross-checking when in doubt. If tools disagree, confirm the exact offer and compare what each history view actually covers rather than treating one chart as a complete record.

When to walk away from the deal
- The same item is currently cheaper elsewhere after accounting for shipping and usable coupons.
- The advertised discount depends on a reference price that does not match the item’s recent prices.
- The offer is above the maximum price you set, even if a countdown suggests urgency.
- The listing differs in model, condition, seller, bundle, or other terms from the item whose history or competing price you checked.
- The available price history is too incomplete to support the claim that this is an unusually low price, and the offer does not look attractive on other checks.
There is no established figure here for what share of Prime Day deals are bad. The practical test is specific to the item: compare its actual recent prices and equivalent current offers, then decide whether the price is one you are willing to pay.
