Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo ship CDs or DVDs safely, secure each disc in its case or sleeve, cushion the contents, and pack them in a snug rigid mailer or box so nothing can shift or bend. CDs and DVDs may qualify for USPS Media Mail, but every item in the package must meet the service’s content rules; safe packaging and postage eligibility are separate questions.
How do I ship CDs safely?
Protect the disc from scratches, impact, and bending by securing it in its hub or sleeve, cushioning the case, and preventing movement inside the package. USPS packaging standards require fragile items to be cushioned for normal handling and the contents to be secured against shifting. A padded envelope may provide cushioning but still leave a jewel case vulnerable to crushing or bending, so add a rigid cardboard insert or use a close-fitting box when needed.
- Check the disc and case. Make sure the disc is seated in its hub or enclosed in a sleeve. Keep loose discs separated so they cannot rub against one another.
- Cushion the case. Wrap the case or add protective cushioning around it. If using a padded mailer, add rigid cardboard when the case could bend under pressure.
- Use a snug outer package. Choose a rigid mailer or box that fits the contents, then fill empty space so the cases cannot move. USPS’s general packaging standard calls for cushioning fragile items and preventing contents from shifting; the rigid insert or close-fitting package is a practical way to meet that standard, not an endorsement of a particular product. See the USPS Domestic Mail Manual, 601.
- Close and address it securely. Seal the package with appropriate packing tape. Write a readable delivery address and include your return address, as required by USPS.
- Check postage eligibility separately. Review everything in the parcel before selecting Media Mail. A package can be well protected but still contain items that do not qualify for that postage class.
What packaging should I use to mail a CD or DVD?
Choose packaging based on the contents and total shipment weight. USPS’s Domestic Mail Manual sets container requirements for shipments of sound recordings, including CDs in paper sleeves, paperboard, or chipboard shells. These are weight-based rules; they do not mean every retail jewel case should be sent in a basic envelope.
| Total shipment weight | USPS sound-recording packaging requirement |
|---|---|
| Up to 3 pounds | A 70-pound basis-weight envelope |
| From 3 up to 10 pounds | An outer corrugated fiberboard container |
| Above 10 pounds through 65 pounds | Heavier containers and reinforcement as specified in the USPS Domestic Mail Manual |
The table gives USPS’s prescribed packaging categories for sound recordings. For a shipment containing fragile retail cases, add cushioning and rigidity as needed to protect against bending and crushing while also meeting the applicable weight-band rule. Bubble mailers for CDs and DVDs can cushion a package, but a padded envelope by itself may not keep a jewel case from being crushed.

Can I ship CDs or DVDs with Media Mail?
Generally, yes: USPS lists CDs and DVDs among the computer media examples that may be sent with Media Mail, subject to the service’s detailed content rules. Media Mail is a restricted-content service, not a general low-cost parcel rate. A disc package that includes an ineligible extra item may not qualify as Media Mail. USPS specifically lists video games, computer drives, and digital drives as ineligible examples; a mixed package containing ineligible items can face higher postage. Check the USPS Media Mail FAQ and review all contents before choosing the rate.
Limits and inspection
USPS’s Media Mail FAQ sets a maximum package weight of 70 pounds and a maximum combined length and girth of 108 inches. Packages may be opened or inspected to confirm eligibility; by mailing at Media Mail rates, the sender consents to inspection. The service also prohibits advertising, subject to narrow exceptions in USPS standards. See Domestic Mail Manual 273 for the service standards.

Delivery timing and postage
USPS does not guarantee Media Mail delivery within a specified time. The Domestic Mail Manual states: “The USPS does not guarantee the delivery of Media Mail or Library Mail within a specified time.” Do not rely on a particular arrival date for a time-sensitive shipment. Postage and service details can change, so check USPS’s current information and postage tools when mailing; the available rules establish Media Mail eligibility and its lack of a guaranteed delivery time, not a current price or a comparison with other services. USPS’s Mail & Shipping Services page also lists CDs and DVDs among Media Mail content.
