How to Stake Solana (SOL): A Guide to Delegation, Rewards and Unstaking

To stake SOL natively, put it in a Solana stake account and delegate that account to a validator using a compatible wallet or Solana CLI tools. Delegation and withdrawal are not instant: the stake becomes active or inactive at an epoch boundary, and network limits can extend the transition. Rewards vary with network conditions and validator performance; they are not guaranteed.

What staking SOL means

Native staking is not simply leaving SOL in a regular wallet. SOL is held in a stake account and delegated to a validator. Validators process transactions and participate in consensus, and delegated stake contributes to their consensus weight. Solana describes delegation as a shared-risk, shared-reward arrangement. Validator commission is a share of rewards, not a fee that guarantees a particular return. See Solana’s staking documentation.

A stake account has a stake authority and a withdraw authority. The withdraw authority can take out inactive stake and can reset the stake authority, so protect it carefully. Each stake account can be delegated to one validator at a time. To delegate to multiple validators, use separate stake accounts or split an existing account. Details are in Solana’s stake-account documentation.

How to stake SOL with a wallet

  1. Choose a staking method. Use a wallet that supports Solana staking, or use Solana CLI tools if you are comfortable managing the process directly. Wallet features and device support can change, so check the current options for your location and setup.
  2. Leave SOL available for network needs. Keep enough SOL in your ordinary wallet to cover the transaction and any other network requirements. Check the wallet’s current instructions rather than assuming a fixed amount.
  3. Create or fund a stake account. Start the wallet’s staking flow and follow its steps to create or fund the account. A stake account is distinct from your ordinary wallet account.
  4. Compare validators. Review current commission and recent performance or uptime. A low commission alone does not establish that a validator is a good choice. Solana does not recommend a particular validator; use current data to make your own selection. See Solana’s guidance.
  5. Delegate and confirm. Select the validator, delegate the stake account, and authorize the transaction in your wallet.
  6. Check the account state. The stake will show as activating until the protocol processes the change at an epoch boundary. It becomes eligible for rewards when active.

Do not assume that sending more SOL to an already delegated stake account automatically increases its active delegation. Solana’s staking FAQ says newly transferred tokens are not automatically delegated.

How rewards and timing work

Solana calculates and issues staking rewards once per epoch. Its FAQ describes an epoch as approximately two days, but stake activation and deactivation happen at epoch boundaries, not on a guaranteed two-day schedule. Network-wide limits on how much stake can change state may stretch a transition across multiple epochs. The timing is therefore variable, not a fixed unstaking promise. See Solana’s staking and inflation FAQ and stake-account documentation.

Reward amounts depend on factors including inflation, the total amount of SOL staked, validator uptime and commission. Solana says rewards are deposited into the stake account that earned them and automatically re-delegated as active stake. No fixed APY is established as a timeless or guaranteed return.

How to unstake and withdraw SOL

  1. Deactivate the delegation. Use the wallet or CLI flow to deactivate the stake account, or the relevant portion of it.
  2. Wait for the stake to become inactive. Deactivation is processed at epoch boundaries, and network-wide stake transition limits can extend the wait.
  3. Withdraw inactive stake. Once inactive, the stake can be withdrawn to a wallet. If the account has a lockup, withdrawal remains blocked until the lockup condition expires, even after deactivation.

If you want to reduce exposure to one validator without deactivating the entire balance, Solana describes splitting the stake account and deactivating only one of the resulting accounts; the other may remain delegated. Consult the Solana staking FAQ for its account guidance.

Native delegation or a stake pool?

With native validator delegation, you choose the validator and manage stake-account delegation directly. Each account can have one validator at a time. A stake pool can simplify delegation management, but introduces pool-specific manager and token mechanics: users deposit SOL for pool tokens and redeem those tokens through the pool. Terms, fees and liquidity are not identical across pools, so review the specific pool rather than assuming a standard arrangement. Solana’s overview is at solana.com/staking.

Risks to weigh before staking

  • Variable rewards: Validator performance and commission affect rewards, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
  • Delayed access: Delegated SOL must be deactivated before withdrawal; epoch timing and network-wide limits may lengthen the wait.
  • Authority security: The withdraw authority controls withdrawal and can reset the stake authority. Keep its signing credentials secure.
  • Lockups: A lockup can prevent withdrawal until its conditions expire, regardless of whether the stake is delegated.
  • Slashing status: Solana’s staking documentation states that slashing is not implemented in the protocol today, while noting that delegators could risk losing tokens through slashing in the future. This is time-sensitive; check the current Solana staking documentation.
  • Pool-specific terms: A pool adds its own mechanics and potentially different fee and liquidity arrangements; assess the particular pool’s terms.

Do you need a hardware wallet?

No. A hardware wallet is optional, not a requirement for staking SOL. Solana documents CLI staking with a connected Ledger Nano, and Ledger describes SOL staking through Ledger Wallet with transaction authorization on a Ledger signer. Check current device support and workflow before choosing a device. Ledger’s materials are at supported crypto assets and Solana staking with Ledger.
