To check whether an order or refund message is genuine, open Amazon’s app or website yourself and review your account; don’t follow links or phone numbers in unexpected messages. A weak discount and a phishing scam are different problems, so use the right check for each.
Check the item’s price history before judging the discount
- Open the product page in the Amazon marketplace where you plan to buy. Amazon says a price-history link may appear beside the price; product pages may also offer Alexa for Shopping. The interface and feature availability can vary, so check the page you are actually using. Amazon’s guide to checking prices describes the feature.
- Review the available history. Amazon describes product-page indicators for 30-, 90-, or 365-day lows and up to 365 days of price history. Its page says price history is available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India, while 365-day insights are rolling out in the U.S., UK, and India. Availability may differ by marketplace and item; don’t assume every product page has the same chart.
- Compare today’s price with the item’s recent range. Ask whether the current offer is unusually low for this product, whether it has been cheaper recently, and whether it meets a price you would have been willing to pay before seeing the promotion. A low-price label is useful context, not a reason by itself to buy.
Amazon said in 2026 that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature since its 2024 launch. That is Amazon’s usage figure, not independent proof that a particular discount is the lowest available or represents a saving.
Read the reference price as context, not proof of a deal
A crossed-out amount or percentage-off badge can make an offer look more compelling, but its meaning depends on the reference price. Amazon defines List Price as a validated suggested retail price. It defines Typical or “Was” Price as the median price paid on Amazon in the previous 90 days, excluding prices paid during limited-time deals. Amazon explains its approach to reference prices and deals.
Neither reference replaces the product’s actual price history. Compare the current offer with what that specific item has cost over time, then decide whether the savings matter to you. A genuine Amazon offer can still be an ordinary price or a worse price than the item reached earlier; that makes it a poor bargain, not automatically a scam.

Verify unexpected order, account, and refund messages independently
- Do not use the message’s link or phone number. Open the Amazon app or type Amazon’s address into your browser yourself.
- Check your account directly. Look at your orders and account activity to see whether the claimed purchase, problem, or refund appears there.
- Contact Amazon through its official app or website if you still need help. Do not rely on caller ID or a number included in an unexpected message.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that caller ID can be spoofed. Its advice is: “Don’t trust the number in your caller ID and don’t trust what the caller tells you.” For a text that might be legitimate, the FTC advises contacting the company through a phone number, email, or website you already know is real—not the details in the message. Stop and verify independently if a caller or message creates urgency or asks you to pay through another website, buy gift cards, install software, or provide remote access to your device. Amazon says it will not ask for payment by phone or email, require gift cards for a legitimate sale or transaction, or charge for customer-service support. Use Amazon’s guidance on identifying and reporting scams and reach the company through channels you open yourself.

Amazon says it took down more than 70,000 phishing websites and 14,000 phone numbers used for impersonation scams in 2025. Those are figures reported by Amazon, not an independent measurement of scam prevalence or a guarantee that a particular message is safe.

Report a suspicious message
- To Amazon: Amazon’s scam guidance says noncustomers can report suspicious messages to [email protected]. Check the current Amazon reporting page for the latest instructions.
- For unwanted texts in the United States: The FTC says to forward them to 7726 (SPAM). You can also report a scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Keep the two checks separate
