You make money as a copywriter by selling a clearly defined writing service to clients or an employer. Choose a deliverable and the kind of buyer who needs it, show your ability with honest samples, then find prospects, agree on scope and price, and deliver reliably. You can begin without paid experience; you cannot promise a particular income or timeline based on the information available here.

1. Choose a service and a buyer

“Copywriting” is broad. Make your offer concrete by naming the work you do and the organization you want to help. Possible services include email campaigns, landing-page copy, product descriptions, and advertising copy. A focused offer gives prospects a clearer reason to contact you than a general claim that you write well.

Start by considering what the buyer needs the writing to do: explain an offer, encourage a purchase, or bring a visitor to the next step. Upwork’s freelancer guide recommends defining your service and ideal client, understanding the client’s problem, and stating your offer plainly.

2. Build a portfolio—even if you have no clients

You can demonstrate your ability with original concept or practice work. For example, create a sample email sequence or landing page for a clearly identified hypothetical or existing business. Show the goal, your role, and how you approached the message. Label the work as a concept or practice project; do not suggest it was commissioned, published, or produced real results if it was not.

Upwork advises freelancers without client work to create portfolio projects of their own and describe the goal, role, and outcomes where applicable. Its profile guidance also stresses that portfolio work must be yours: “taking credit for work by others violates our TOS.” Be precise about what you did, and do not claim a result you cannot substantiate.

3. Set up a simple professional presence

Make it easy for a potential client to understand what you offer and how to reach you. Your profile or website should include:

  • A concise description of the service and buyer you focus on.
  • Relevant samples, clearly labeled as client work or practice work.
  • Accurate claims about your experience and skills.
  • A clear way to contact you or request a project.

A freelance platform profile is one option, not a requirement. Upwork says its profile can display skills, portfolio, and work history; its guidance recommends accurate representation of your capabilities.

4. Find prospects and pitch a specific solution

There is no single best channel for every copywriter. Consider the level of control you want over positioning and the client relationship, how much prospecting you are willing to do, and whether the channel charges fees or proposal costs.

Channel How it can work Trade-off to consider
Direct outreach Contact businesses that appear to need help with a specific message or deliverable. You choose whom to approach, but you must find prospects and start the conversation yourself.
Referrals and professional networks Let people in your professional circle know what service you provide and what kind of client you can help. Relationships can lead to introductions, but referrals are not a predictable source of work.
Agencies Offer freelance support to agencies that need copywriting capacity. The agency may bring the client relationship; clarify your role, scope, and terms before starting.
Freelance marketplaces Respond to posted work or offer a packaged service to marketplace clients. Competition, proposal requirements, and platform charges can affect the economics and how you manage the client relationship.

For a direct pitch, keep the message relevant to the business: identify the service you offer, connect it to a specific need, and link to a related sample. Avoid promising revenue or conversion improvements that you cannot demonstrate.

On Upwork, freelancers can search for hourly or fixed-price jobs and submit proposals; the platform also offers packaged projects through Project Catalog. Its public freelancer page currently states a 0%–15% service fee on earnings. Connects are used to submit proposals, the number required varies by job, and some jobs require none. These are Upwork-specific platform terms, not general copywriting costs, and can change; check the current freelancer information before relying on them.

5. Set a price and define the scope

There is no universal beginner rate established for copywriting. Set a fee based on the work involved, your experience, your costs, and the value the client expects—not on an unsupported promise about what copywriters generally earn.

You can price by the hour or by a defined project. An hourly rate can suit work whose scope is uncertain, while a project fee can be easier to assess when the deliverables and boundaries are clear. Neither method is automatically better. Estimate the full work involved, including research, calls, drafting, revisions, and administration, rather than counting only the words written.

Best Value
  • For hourly work: state the rate, how time will be tracked, and how you will handle work that exceeds the initial estimate.
  • For project work: list each deliverable, the included revision rounds, the timeline, and what falls outside the fee.
  • For either: agree in writing on payment timing or milestones, who supplies materials and approvals, and how changes to the brief affect deadlines and cost.

Upwork’s freelancer guide recommends considering expenses, experience, and value, and notes that rates can change as skills and demand develop. It does not set a universal copywriting rate. The terms you put in writing are prudent business practice; the specific legal requirements for contracts and rights depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction.

6. Deliver well and build the next opportunity

Confirm the brief and deadlines before drafting. Keep the client informed, especially if requirements or timing change. Deliver the agreed work, then ask for feedback. If you want to show the project in your portfolio, first make sure you are permitted to do so and describe your contribution accurately.

Good communication and reliable delivery can make repeat assignments or referrals more likely, but they do not guarantee ongoing work. Continue prospecting rather than treating one successful project as a dependable income stream.

7. Keep records and understand your work status

Track income and expenses, and retain agreements and payment records. Tax and worker-classification rules depend on where you work. In the United States, the IRS says classification considers behavioral control, financial control, and the type of relationship. It cautions: “There is no ‘magic’ or set number of factors that ‘makes’ someone an employee or an independent contractor and no one factor stands alone in making this determination.” Read the IRS guidance on employee and independent-contractor status; a contract label by itself does not settle classification.

What you can—and cannot—predict about copywriting income

Copywriting income depends on the services you sell, the work you win, your costs, and how consistently you find clients. The available sources do not establish a reliable copywriting-specific earnings distribution, a standard beginner rate, or a typical time to a first client. Treat income claims that promise a fixed amount or timeline with caution unless they are supported by evidence that matches the service, location, and experience level you are evaluating.
