To establish a business brokerage account, apply under the business’s actual legal name and entity, confirm that the broker accepts its structure and formation jurisdiction, and prepare tax, ownership, identity, and signing-authority information. The application and document list depend on the broker, entity, and requested account permissions, so verify the current checklist before submitting anything.
1. Confirm which entity will own the account
Choose the legal business entity that will hold the brokerage assets—not simply the person who will place trades. Before filling out an application, confirm that the broker accepts the entity type and the jurisdiction where it was formed. Eligibility and documentation can differ for corporations, LLCs, partnerships, and sole proprietorships.
Use the entity’s exact legal name and be ready to provide its address, formation jurisdiction, business activity, and tax details. If the business has more than one entity, confirm which one is applying; an account opened in one entity’s name is not automatically an account for its owner or an affiliated company.
2. Confirm the tax identification details
There is no universal rule that every business application must use an EIN or, conversely, an owner’s Social Security number. The correct information depends on the entity’s federal tax classification and the broker’s application. Interactive Brokers’ U.S. small-business application asks for a business tax identification number and, for LLCs, the U.S. tax classification. Check the broker’s current instructions and the entity’s tax status; consult a tax professional if its classification or election makes the answer uncertain.

3. Identify owners, controlling persons, and account users
Prepare the names and identifying details of the people the broker asks about. Depending on the application, that may include beneficial owners, a controlling officer, authorized signers, and individuals who will trade or administer the account. Ownership thresholds and information requirements differ by provider, so do not assume a threshold used by one firm applies elsewhere.
Decide who should have authority to open the account and who should receive trading or administrative permissions. Only request permissions the business intends to use and has authorized. Margin, options, and other features may involve additional questions, approvals, or risk documents.
4. Gather business records and identity documents
Providers may ask for some combination of the following. This is a preparation list, not a universal checklist; follow the selected broker’s current application and document requests.

Interactive Brokers lists identity and address records, beneficial-owner information, and authority documents among possible requirements, and notes that complex business or corporate structures may prompt requests for additional documents. Its Customer Identification Program Notice says it may request a driver’s license, passport, or organization formation papers; it warns, “Unless you provide the requested information and documentation, we may not be able to open your account.” Interactive Brokers’ small-business application requirements and its Customer Identification Program Notice describe its own process, not a checklist for every broker.

5. Confirm who must sign and what proves authority
Do not assume that the person completing the online application can bind the business or authorize every user. Check the entity’s governing documents and the broker’s instructions for required signers and evidence of authority.
Requirements can depend on the entity and the purpose of the paperwork. For example, Fidelity’s Brokerage Business Account Certification concerns changes to authorized individuals on an existing account; it is not an application to open a new non-managed business account. The form describes different signer and document rules for corporations, LLCs, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. For an LLC, it says authorized managers must sign when the governing agreement provides for manager management, while all members must sign for a member-managed LLC. Partnership signatures depend on the general partners and the partnership agreement. Treat these as Fidelity’s instructions for that form, not universal rules.

6. Complete the application and respond to verification requests
Use the selected broker’s business-account application, enter the entity’s information consistently with its records, and submit the requested documents through the broker’s designated channel. Financial institutions collect and verify identifying information about applicants and related people or organizations. If the broker asks for clarification or additional records, respond using its instructions; missing information can prevent the application from being completed.
Check that the application’s entity name, tax details, address, ownership information, and signer details agree with the supporting records. If the business structure is complex, ask the provider which additional documents it needs rather than assuming a standard formation document will be sufficient.
7. Fund the approved account and set permissions carefully
After the account is approved, use the broker’s funding instructions for the chosen method. Requirements can vary by transfer type. Interactive Brokers notes that funding-stage information depends on the method; it also distinguishes a deposit notification—which does not itself move funds or positions—from an actual transfer. A notification alone should not be treated as proof that the account has been funded.

How to compare brokers for a business account
Compare providers against the needs of the particular entity and account, rather than assuming one firm’s application rules apply to another.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Accepted entity types, formation jurisdictions, and business-account purposes. |
| Application and records | Business documents, address evidence, individual identity records, and owner or controlling-person details. |
| Authority and signatures | Who must sign and what records establish authority to open, administer, or trade in the account. |
| Account permissions | Cash or margin availability, requested trading features, and account-administration access. |
| Funding | Supported transfer methods, currencies, and source-account information. |
| Costs and service | Current commissions, account fees, support availability, and service arrangements in the provider’s current disclosures. |
Provider materials are not interchangeable. Interactive Brokers publishes a small-business application requirements page, while the reviewed Fidelity certification form is for changing authorized people on an existing account. Confirm the current application for the specific business account you intend to open. Detailed Schwab requirements are not included here; check Schwab’s current official application materials directly before relying on a checklist or comparing its process.
