In the United States, you can cash a USPS money order for free at any Post Office. Western Union and MoneyGram orders may be cashed at participating locations or deposited into a bank account, but fees, ID rules and acceptance vary. Before you go, confirm that the location handles your issuer’s money orders. For a USPS order, leave it unsigned until you are at the counter.
Where you can cash or deposit a money order
| Issuer or option | What you can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | Cash a USPS money order for free at any Post Office. USPS also says banks and some stores may cash postal money orders. | Confirm a bank or store accepts it, and bring primary photo ID. USPS cashes domestic postal money orders for the exact amount. USPS money order guidance |
| Western Union | Cash at a bank or other retailer, or deposit into a bank account. | Confirm that the chosen agent or institution provides the service and whether it charges a fee. A location that sells Western Union money orders may not cash them. Western Union money order guidance |
| MoneyGram | Deposit into a bank or credit union account, or cash at many check-cashing locations. | Each location sets its own policy and may charge a fee; most check-cashing locations require ID. MoneyGram money order FAQ |
| Your bank or credit union | Deposit the money order into an account if the institution accepts it. | Acceptance and available methods depend on the institution. Do not assume a particular account, mobile app or ATM will accept it; check before endorsing or depositing. |
The issuer guidance describes general options, not a guarantee that every bank, store or agent will accept every money order. Call the specific location and ask whether it cashes or deposits an order from your issuer, what identification it requires, and whether there is a fee.
What to bring and how to endorse it
For a USPS money order
- Bring the unsigned money order and primary photo ID to a Post Office.
- Wait to endorse it. USPS’s instruction is: “Do not sign the money order.”
- Sign at the counter in front of the retail associate.
Signing in advance can interfere with the verification process. Follow the instructions of the institution or cashing location if you are not using a Post Office.
For Western Union or MoneyGram
Check the issuer and location’s instructions before signing or handing over the order. MoneyGram says most check-cashing locations require ID and advises against signing an order over to a third party; whether a third-party order is accepted is up to the institution or location. Cash it or deposit it?
Cashing gives you the money directly, while depositing places it in an eligible bank or credit union account. Ask your institution about its method, timing and endorsement requirements before you sign.
