He stepped away for a year, arranged temporary leadership coverage, and stayed in occasional contact with the team. In a 2021 profile, Hu said he returned feeling recharged and ready to continue—but his experience is one founder’s account, not proof that sabbaticals reliably restore passion or improve a company’s performance.
Why Hu decided to step away
Hu launched Jobscan, a resume-optimization platform, in early 2014 after a frustrating job search the year before. GeekWire’s February 20, 2021 profile reported that by 2019 his excitement for the business was waning. He wanted to find out whether time away might rekindle it.
That decision came after years of building the company. The profile said Jobscan began with an initial hosting cost of $35 and had 27 employees and more than 1 million users when the story was published in 2021. Those are historical figures reported by GeekWire, not current or independently audited counts.
How he arranged the sabbatical
Hu asked a friend who had built a company to take over temporarily. The two worked alongside each other to ease the leadership handoff before Hu left in June 2019. The arrangement gave the company someone in charge while Hu took time away.

It was not a complete break from work. Hu stayed in touch through Slack and did a few hours of work here and there during his travels. He spent time in Europe and Alaska, then returned to the Northwest in December 2019 to check in.
How the break turned into a return
Hu had planned to travel farther in Asia, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. He stayed in Taipei and resumed the CEO role full-time in March 2020.

In GeekWire’s profile, Hu described himself as recharged: “I was recharged and came back with much more energy and wanting to continue for another 10 years,” he said. That is his account of the effect on him; the profile does not measure a broader effect on founders or companies.
What his account says—and does not say—about taking time off
Hu’s experience illustrates some practical details behind a founder’s leave: temporary leadership coverage, a period of transition, and a decision about how much contact to maintain. It does not establish a formula for other founders. The profile does not report a study, comparison group, or company-performance measure showing that a year away causes renewed enthusiasm.

GeekWire also described Hu’s personal work habits, including setting aside time for exercise, family, friends, and reflection. He said he tracked his time weekly and used quiet reflection with a notebook and pen. These are details of his routine, not tested advice or a guarantee that the same approach will work for someone else.
