Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAs of September 2026, The Points Guy values an American Airlines AAdvantage mile at 1.45 cents. That is a planning benchmark—not cash you can redeem at a fixed rate or a guarantee for any particular award. Your actual value depends on the comparable fare you would pay, the miles required, and the award’s taxes and fees.
How to calculate what your miles are worth for a flight
Use the cash fare for a comparable itinerary and subtract the taxes and fees you will still pay on the award:
(Comparable cash fare − award taxes and fees) ÷ miles required × 100 = cents per mile
For example, enter the paid fare and award checkout figures for the dates and route you are considering. Compare like with like: cabin, travel dates, stops, schedule, and flexibility should be reasonably similar. A result above 1.45 cents means the miles offset more of that comparable fare than the benchmark suggests; below it means they offset less. Neither result alone decides whether a trip is worthwhile—you also need to want the itinerary and be comfortable using the miles now rather than saving them.

What the 1.45-cent estimate represents
The Points Guy’s September 2026 estimate is based on AAdvantage award prices observed in Points Path user searches during the three months before publication. It is an estimate of typical award value, not an official American Airlines exchange rate or a promise of a particular return. Award prices and the cash fares available to you can differ from the data behind the estimate.
Use 1.45 cents as a reference point when deciding whether to redeem, not as a required minimum or a guaranteed value. If a particular award offers materially less, paying cash and keeping the miles for another use may make sense. If it offers more, that can be an attractive redemption if the flight suits your needs and the fees and restrictions work for you.
American award prices and fees vary by itinerary
American says flight awards on its own flights start at 7,500 miles each way. That is a starting price, not a quote: the mileage price shown in a search varies with the date, flight, and availability. American also says taxes and carrier-imposed fees start at $5.60 per person per award; the amount depends on the itinerary and appears during the booking search. Check the exact award and checkout total before calculating value.

American permits award travel as one-way trips or combinations such as round trips and multi-city itineraries. Its official description is: “Choose flight awards for any seat on an American Airlines flight for as low as 7,500 miles each way plus any applicable taxes and carrier-imposed fees.” See American’s award-travel information for current details.
Compare partner awards separately
AAdvantage miles can also be used for flights on oneworld and other participating airlines. Partner awards follow American’s partner-award framework, with one-way starting values and route-specific notes; being a participating airline does not guarantee award-seat availability. American says a one-way trip containing two long-haul international flights requires two awards. Review the route rules and confirm seats and total costs for your dates in American’s partner-award information.
The Points Guy notes that some long-haul premium-cabin partner awards may exceed its 1.45-cent benchmark. Treat that as a possibility to check, not a general result: availability, route rules, mileage cost, and cash fare all affect the calculation. Use the same formula, with a comparable cash itinerary and the partner award’s actual taxes and fees.

Non-flight redemptions may deliver less value
The Points Guy reports that many AAdvantage options such as hotels, car rentals, cruises, and vacation packages typically return around 1 cent per mile or less. That is a broad assessment, not a fixed rate for every offer. Compare the specific redemption’s cash price and terms with the value you might get from a flight award before using miles. A lower cents-per-mile result can still be reasonable if the option is useful to you and you would otherwise pay for it.
How earning rules affect the value of future miles
American says members without status generally earn 5 base miles per eligible U.S. dollar on American-marketed travel. The calculation uses base fare plus carrier-imposed fees and excludes government-imposed taxes and fees; eligible status members receive mileage bonuses. The same rules page says Basic Economy tickets bought at or after 12:01 a.m. Central Time on December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. Check American’s current earning rules against the fare and purchase date before estimating miles from a specific booking.

The AAdvantage terms effective March 1, 2026 say some partner-marketed or special fares can earn based on distance and booking code, and partner eligibility can change. The program’s terms and conditions set out those distinctions.
Quick Recap
A quick checklist before you redeem
- Use a realistic paid fare for the same dates, route, cabin, and a similar itinerary.
- Use the mileage price shown for the exact award you can book, not a starting award rate.
- Subtract the award’s actual taxes and fees from the comparable cash fare.
- Check partner availability and route-specific rules if you are not flying American.
- Consider whether saving the miles for another award is more useful than redeeming them now.
