These are individual sellers’ advertised figures, not a measured market average or a guarantee for a particular item. The right deal depends on the exact model, condition, price comparison, warranty and services included.
What discounts do retailers advertise?
The examples below show why a single percentage is misleading: each figure comes from a specific retailer and uses its own comparison price.

Outlet listings may combine appliances with different histories, so the label alone does not tell you exactly what you are buying.

Scratch-and-dent
Usually describes a unit with cosmetic damage, but ask for the specific blemish and its location. A dent on a side panel hidden after installation is different from damage to a door, control panel, or surface that affects fit or use.
Open-box, display, and other outlet stock
Appliance Outlet Canada distinguishes scratch-and-dent units from open-box units—which it describes as returned or displayed but unused—and new factory-sealed units. It says scratch-and-dent items tend to have its deepest discounts. Yale Appliance says its outlet includes floor displays, scratch-and-dent, discontinued, and overstock appliances, and that it does not sell used or reconditioned products through that outlet. Those are descriptions of each retailer’s own inventory, not universal definitions.

Do not assume a low price means an appliance is new, fully functional, or covered by a manufacturer warranty. Ask what happened to the unit and get its condition and coverage in writing.
How to decide whether a specific deal is worthwhile
- Compare the same model. Check the current price for the exact model number, rather than relying only on MSRP or the price of a similar appliance. Compare final prices after required fees.
- Document the damage. Ask for clear photos or inspect the appliance in person. Confirm in writing that the defect is cosmetic and whether it could affect operation, fit, finish, or installation.
- Check what comes with it. Verify that needed parts, shelves, hoses, manuals, and installation components are included. Price any missing essentials before deciding.
- Get the warranty terms for that unit. Confirm who handles service, when coverage starts, what is excluded, and whether the known damage is recorded as a pre-existing condition.
- Read the item-specific return policy. Outlet terms may differ from the retailer’s standard policy for new-in-box products. Check eligibility, deadlines, and any return fees before paying.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include delivery, installation, haul-away, and other required charges. Confirm that the retailer serves your area and that the quoted services are actually included.
Why the fine print can change the savings
Retailer policies illustrate why the headline discount is only part of the decision. Yale Appliance says its outlet pieces are inspected and cosmetic notes recorded, coverage begins on delivery, and its stated 15-day return eligibility applies to appliances new in box. Those terms apply to Yale’s outlet and are not an industry standard.
Availability can also change quickly. Appliance Outlet Canada says its inventory turns over quickly and recommends calling to confirm a specific unit is available. Verify the listing and terms before travelling or making a purchase.
