To check a product’s authenticity, assess the seller and price, compare the item with the manufacturer’s official details, and use an official brand or government verification method if one applies. No single visual clue, barcode scan, or serial-number check proves every product is genuine. If the result is unclear, ask the manufacturer directly.
Before you buy: check the seller and the deal
Research the seller
Look for a clear business identity, usable contact details, seller history, and understandable return and refund terms. Check the brand’s official website to see whether it names the retailer as authorized. INTERPOL recommends buying from authorized retailers and checking a company’s registration details for online purchases (INTERPOL’s shopping guidance).
An authorized seller can reduce risk, but it does not replace inspecting the item you receive. Keep the listing and seller information in case you need to resolve a problem.
Compare the price with established sellers
A price far below the manufacturer’s normal price or established retailers’ prices is a warning to investigate, not proof of counterfeiting. The European Commission and the US Postal Inspection Service both identify unusually low prices as a possible warning sign (European Commission; US Postal Inspection Service).

Find the manufacturer’s reference information
Before purchase, find the manufacturer’s official product page and authentication instructions. Note the model, variant, specifications, packaging and any serial numbers or security features the manufacturer says to expect. A marketplace listing or seller-provided explanation is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s information.
Inspect the item against official product details
Compare the delivered item and its packaging with official images and specifications. Look for mismatched model or variant details, misspellings, misplaced logos, poor printing, missing manufacturer or importer information, incorrect marks, and signs of weak construction. These can be clues, but counterfeits may look convincing. The European Commission identifies product quality, packaging, trademarks and security measures as useful indicators (Identify fake goods).

Check seals, holograms or other security features only if the manufacturer says they are used for that product. Features vary, so neither the presence nor absence of a QR code or hologram is decisive by itself. As the European Commission advises: “When in doubt, contact or check out the website of the manufacturer of the genuine product.”
Use the verification route that applies to the product
Verification schemes cover particular products, identifiers and regions. Use the official method intended for the item, then confirm that the result matches its exact model or identifier. A code that leads to an unrelated page or returns a different model warrants a question to the brand—not reliance on the code alone.

These examples are not interchangeable. Amazon Transparency is a brand serialization program, while BIS and Singapore’s SAFETY Mark checks apply to specified marks, products and jurisdictions. A safety registration and a genuine-brand check answer different questions.
If you still doubt the product
- Pause use if there may be a safety risk. Do not keep using a safety-sensitive item while a serious concern is unresolved.
- Contact the manufacturer independently. Use contact details from its official website, not just a number or link supplied by the seller. Ask it to confirm the model, serial number or security feature.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the receipt, listing, seller messages and packaging; take clear photos of the item, labels and identifiers.
- Use the retailer or marketplace process. Follow its return, refund or complaint route and provide the records you saved.
- Report suspected counterfeit sales through the appropriate local channel. INTERPOL advises reporting suspected counterfeit sales to local police. If US mail was involved, the Postal Inspection Service provides a reporting route (INTERPOL; US Postal Inspection Service).
What a product check can—and cannot—establish
Authenticity, seller legitimacy and safety compliance are related but separate. A product may pass a particular registry check without that registry serving as a universal authenticity test; likewise, a plausible appearance does not establish that an item meets local safety requirements. For Singapore’s specified controlled goods, the current Consumer Product Safety Office page says a person convicted of supplying unregistered goods may face a maximum fine of S$10,000 and/or imprisonment for up to two years. That rule applies to those controlled goods in Singapore, not to products generally.
