Netflix helped change how people rented movies, but the evidence does not establish that it alone caused Blockbuster’s bankruptcy or made physical media disappear. Its mailed-DVD subscription made rentals more convenient; streaming later changed how many viewers watched films; and Netflix eventually shut its own DVD service while discs remained useful for finding some hard-to-stream titles.
What Netflix changed about renting movies
Netflix’s early advantage was not simply that customers could order a disc online. Its subscription model changed the routine and cost structure of renting: instead of visiting a store for each rental, customers received DVDs by mail and could keep them without late fees. The Associated Press described Netflix mailing millions of discs each week from distribution centers at the service’s peak. That account helps explain the appeal of the model, though it is not a measured study of how much any one factor affected Blockbuster.
For customers, the contrast was practical: a store-centered rental required a trip, while a mail subscription moved delivery to the home and removed the pressure of a late-fee deadline. That did not make the two services identical in every respect, and the available evidence does not establish that Netflix’s convenience alone explains Blockbuster’s decline.
How Netflix moved from DVDs to streaming
Streaming began while DVDs were still part of the business
Netflix’s 2012 Form 10-K says the company launched streaming in 2007. At that time, Netflix described its U.S. service as a combination of streaming and DVDs by mail. The company said its core strategy was to grow streaming in the United States and internationally. This was a transition, not an overnight replacement: mailed discs and online video coexisted in Netflix’s business.

A strategic shift brought a customer backlash
In July 2011, Netflix separated DVD-only plans from streaming plans and made related pricing and branding changes. In its 2012 filing, the company said those changes led to significant customer cancellations. The episode complicates the idea that Netflix simply made flawless moves while an incumbent failed: even a company driving change could misjudge how customers would respond to a change in plans.
The filing also described Netflix as competing with other internet video services, DVD rental outlets and kiosks, and entertainment retailers. The shift in home video therefore involved a changing competitive landscape, not just a contest between Netflix and Blockbuster.

Did Netflix kill Blockbuster?
Netflix was part of the transformation in how people rented and watched films, but the sources available here do not establish that it was the sole cause of Blockbuster’s bankruptcy. They document Netflix’s model and strategy; they do not provide a complete account of Blockbuster’s finances, management decisions, or bankruptcy. It is more accurate to say that Netflix offered a different rental experience and later pursued streaming as the market changed than to treat the company as the proven, single cause of Blockbuster’s failure.
The familiar story that Blockbuster rejected a Netflix acquisition offer should also not be treated as an established explanation for the bankruptcy on this evidence alone. The Associated Press mentions an offer in its retrospective, but a detailed causal claim would require stronger documentation of Blockbuster’s decisions and financial condition.

What happened to Netflix’s DVD service
Netflix’s DVD-by-mail business lasted well beyond the launch of streaming. In September 2023, the Associated Press reported that Netflix was mailing its final discs from five remaining distribution centers. Fewer than one million people still subscribed at the time, compared with more than 20 million at the service’s peak. AP also reported that the DVD library had exceeded 100,000 titles. These figures describe Netflix’s service, not the total number of people using discs or the size of the physical-media market.
Netflix’s 2012 filing had already signaled the company’s view of the transition: “We believe that the DVD portion of our domestic service will be a fading differentiator to our streaming success.” That was Netflix’s own corporate assessment, rather than an independent finding about the future of physical media.

Why the end of Netflix DVDs did not mean the end of physical media
Closing a rental service is not the same as eliminating a format. The AP’s 2023 account noted that discs continued to serve viewers looking for films that were difficult to find through streaming. That is a specific use case, not proof of how large the current physical-media market is: no comprehensive present-day market statistic is established here.
The choice between streaming and a disc can still come down to the particular film and the way someone wants to watch it:

Netflix’s final DVD shipment marked the end of its own mail-rental service. It did not show that DVDs or Blu-rays had ceased to exist, or that every viewer had moved to streaming.
