Nike says its innovation process starts with athlete needs, then moves through collaboration, prototyping and refinement before ideas become products—or remain concepts. The company’s October 2025 reorganization brought Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse innovation, design and product teams together, while examples such as the Zoom Fly 6 and FlyWeb show how that approach spans running footwear and performance apparel. Nike’s performance and sustainability figures are company-reported claims, not independent assessments.
How Nike says its innovation process works
Nike describes innovation as a connected process: athletes share goals and challenges; designers, researchers and product teams turn those needs into ideas; and prototypes are tested and refined. The result may be a product, a material or construction method, or an exploratory concept that is not broadly available.
In October 2025, Nike announced that Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse were uniting their Innovation, Design and Product teams in an athlete-focused creation organization intended to share insights, technology and methods of making. Nike Chief Innovation, Design and Product Officer Phil McCartney summarized the stated principle: “Everything begins and ends with the athlete’s voice — their goals, their struggles, their drive.” The same announcement named Aero-FIT, Nike Mind, Project Amplify and Therma-FIT Air Milano as examples of work in the combined organization; the announcement does not establish that each is a generally available consumer product. Nike’s October 23, 2025 announcement.
Prototypes depend on feedback and trust
Nike’s account of prototype testing describes exchanges among athletes, designers and scientists about how a product feels and performs. Tobie Hatfield, Nike Senior Director, Athlete* Innovation, said: “Our main focus is trust. If athletes don’t know that you’re looking out for them as individuals, they’ll never trust the product you make for them. Everything we do has to be built on earning their trust.” This describes Nike’s development philosophy; it is not independent evidence that a particular product performs better than alternatives. What Nike’s innovations change
The examples Nike has described address different needs, so they are best understood as illustrations of different approaches—not as a head-to-head ranking. Some change the material or construction; others alter cushioning, create a concept for future footwear, or explore movement and mindset.
| Example and date | Athlete need or intended use | What Nike says changed | Development stage and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| FlyWeb Bra, June 2025 | Fit, support, airflow and stretch in performance apparel | Nike says FlyWeb is a soft polymer, TPU, formed through 3D printing. The bra is designed as one seamless layer, with computationally tuned zones. | Nike’s feature includes one-of-one athlete product context; it does not establish that the exact prototype is generally available. Claims and descriptions are Nike’s. Source. |
| Nike On Air, April 2024 | Explore future Air concepts and gather athlete perspectives | At a Paris event, Nike featured 40 elite athletes and presented 13 athlete concepts for future Air as one-off, AI-explored, 3D-printed footwear. It also previewed the Pegasus Premium’s sculpted Air Zoom unit, which Nike said was designed to carry a runner’s power through heel-to-toe transition. | The 13 concepts were one-offs, not evidence of a product range for sale. The Pegasus Premium was a preview in this event account. These are Nike’s descriptions. Source. |
| Zoom Fly 6, October 2024 | Training workouts and race day for everyday runners | Nike describes a full-length carbon-fiber FlyPlate and ZoomX foam in a training-and-racing hybrid. It says the shoe weighs at least 10% less than its predecessor. | A named product, with development and performance details reported by Nike. Nike says Eliud Kipchoge tested it on asphalt and dirt roads and worked with the company on energy return, comfort and protection; this is not independent comparative testing. Source. |
| Aero-FIT, named in October 2025 | Airflow and material reuse in athletic apparel | Nike says the apparel is made from 100% textile waste and engineered to deliver more than double the airflow of legacy Nike athletic apparel. | The material and airflow figures are Nike claims. The October 2025 announcement names Aero-FIT but does not, by itself, establish broad availability. Source. |
FlyWeb: changing fabric construction
FlyWeb illustrates innovation at the material and construction level rather than only in cushioning or shoe shape. Nike says its 3D-printed TPU forms a soft polymer structure, and that the FlyWeb Bra’s single seamless layer is computationally designed to vary fit, support, airflow and stretch across zones. Nike VP of Innovation Janett Nichol said: “You can actually feel the air on your chest. Most women have never experienced that while running. We don’t even think about it because it’s just not something we’ve ever expected to feel.” The feature’s one-of-one athlete product context should not be mistaken for proof that this exact prototype is on sale. Zoom Fly 6: a product for training and racing
The Zoom Fly 6 offers a concrete example of Nike connecting athlete-informed development to an everyday-running product. In its October 10, 2024 release, Nike positioned it as a hybrid for everyday workouts and race day, with a full-length carbon-fiber FlyPlate and ZoomX foam. Nike reported that it weighs at least 10% less than its predecessor and said Eliud Kipchoge tested it on asphalt and dirt roads, collaborating on energy return, comfort and protection. Those weight and development details are Nike’s claims, not independent test results. Nike’s Zoom Fly 6 release.
On Air: concepts are not the same as products
Nike’s April 2024 “Nike On Air” event in Paris featured 40 elite athletes and 13 athlete concepts for future Air. Nike described the footwear as one-off, AI-explored and 3D-printed. The event also previewed the Pegasus Premium and its sculpted Air Zoom unit. These examples show how co-creation can be used to explore ideas, but a concept or preview should not be treated as a broadly available product or as proof of measured performance. How sustainability fits into Nike’s innovation claims
Nike presents sustainability as part of product and operational innovation. Its sustainability page, accessed October 8, 2026, reports the following progress for FY20–FY25. These are NIKE, Inc.-published figures; they should be read as company-reported results rather than independent findings.
| Area | NIKE, Inc. reported FY20–FY25 progress |
|---|---|
| Emissions in NIKE, Inc. operations | 77% absolute reduction |
| Emissions in manufacturing and transportation | 47% absolute reduction |
| Electricity in NIKE, Inc. operations | 100% renewable electricity |
| Materials | 51% environmentally preferred materials usage |

What this approach means for everyday athletes
Elite athletes can help Nike explore and refine ideas, but the examples differ in how directly they connect to everyday use. Nike explicitly positioned the Zoom Fly 6 for everyday workouts and race day. Its On Air concepts were one-off explorations, while FlyWeb’s feature describes a prototype context. The October 2025 organization announcement names platforms but does not establish that all are available to consumers.
Across these cases, “innovation” can mean a new product, a different manufacturing method, an apparel material, or an early-stage concept. Nike’s own accounts explain intended use and development; they do not provide an independent comparison showing that these innovations outperform competing products. A reader evaluating a specific item should distinguish Nike’s stated design goals and company-reported figures from independently established results.
