How Products Are Made: From Design to Delivery

Products are made through processes tailored to their materials and purpose, from design and sourcing to production, quality checks, packaging and delivery.

Products are made by turning selected materials into parts or finished goods through processes chosen for that particular item. A water bottle, an electronic device and a loaf of bread do not share one manufacturing recipe: their materials, production methods, safety needs and checks differ. A useful way to understand the journey is to follow a familiar object from its design through production, quality checks, packaging and delivery.

1. Decide what the product must do

Before production begins, a company defines what the product is for and what it must do. Requirements can include performance, size, durability, safety, appearance and cost. Designers also consider how the product will be used—and, where relevant, how it might be misused—because those decisions affect materials, construction and safety controls.

Design is not separate from manufacturing. A product must be designed so it can be made consistently with available processes, equipment, measurements and supplier capabilities. Documentation helps communicate specifications and keep design and production aligned. NIST’s Baldrige Criteria Commentary discusses product and process design considerations such as manufacturability, safety, measurement and suppliers.

2. Choose materials and suppliers

The design determines what materials and components are needed. A simple product might use one main material; a more complex one may depend on parts made by several suppliers. Manufacturers specify the properties required—for example, dimensions or other material characteristics—and select suppliers that can meet those specifications reliably.

Supplier checks and documentation matter because a component that does not meet its requirements can disrupt production or affect the finished product. For consumer goods, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends identifying hazards, considering foreseeable use and misuse, specifying safety-relevant materials, and assessing supplier reliability. These are best-practice recommendations, not a complete list of mandatory rules; legal requirements vary by product and jurisdiction. See the CPSC’s Manufacturing Best Practices.

3. Plan how to make it

Manufacturers choose processes to suit the product’s materials, design, expected production scale and quality requirements. Planning covers the equipment and sequence of operations, how parts will fit together, what measurements are needed, and where checks should take place. It also considers whether suppliers and production systems can reliably meet the design specifications.

There is no single manufacturing sequence used for every product. NIST’s manufacturing overview spans areas such as machining, additive manufacturing, manufacturing systems, process measurement and control, quality assurance and supply chains. Those areas illustrate why the right method depends on the item rather than on a universal factory template.

4. Form, fabricate or process the materials

Production transforms raw materials or supplied components into the shapes, ingredients or parts the design requires. Depending on the product, a manufacturer may use methods such as:

  • Forming: shaping material into a desired form.
  • Machining: removing material to create specified shapes or dimensions.
  • Additive manufacturing: building an object by adding material.
  • Chemical or biological processing: changing or combining ingredients to make a product such as a chemical or food.

These are broad method families, not steps every product goes through. A product may use one method, several methods, or a process specific to its material and purpose.

5. Assemble parts when needed

Some products consist of a single piece; others are built by joining or fitting together parts. Assembly might involve fastening, bonding, wiring or another method suited to the design. For a complex product, the order of assembly can matter: components must fit, function together and remain accessible for any required testing or repair.

Assembly is only one possible stage. Food and chemical products, for example, may be processed or blended rather than assembled from discrete parts. The manufacturing route follows the product’s design and materials.

6. Check quality and safety during production

Quality is managed through the process, not just by inspecting the final item. Depending on the product, manufacturers may check incoming materials, measure parts during production, test whether a product works as intended, and verify safety-related characteristics before release. The appropriate checks depend on the product and its risks; no single test applies to every good.

Measurement tools and reliable data help manufacturers determine whether materials and products meet their specifications. NIST describes measurement science, calibration and reference materials as resources that support quality. ISO’s quality assurance overview describes quality work across planning, production, testing, packaging and delivery, including material testing and process monitoring.

7. Package and deliver the finished product

Once a product is ready for release, it may be packaged for storage, transport or sale. Packaging can contain and protect goods, make them easier to handle and move, and provide information or presentation for the user. ISO/IEC Guide 41:2018 also addresses resource optimization, reuse and recovery; ISO says that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. Its scope is described at ISO’s Guide 41 page.

From the production facility, goods may move to storage, retailers or directly to customers. The packaging and distribution arrangements depend on the product, its handling needs and where it is going.

Why manufacturing routes differ

A handmade item, a machined part, an assembled electronic device and a processed food product may all be described as manufactured, but their production steps are different. The material, production scale, design requirements, supplier capabilities, safety and quality checks, and packaging needs all help determine the route.
