There is no fixed number of years. For a U.S. regional-airline first officer, the timeline depends on which FAA certificate and flight-hour route the pilot qualifies for, how quickly they build the required experience, and the airline’s own hiring standards. The often-cited 1,500-hour milestone is not universal, and reaching an hour threshold is not the same as getting hired or finishing airline training.
What does “qualify” mean?
The answer changes with the endpoint. A pilot may meet FAA certificate requirements, satisfy an airline’s posted minimums, receive a job offer, or complete the airline’s hiring and training process. Those are separate steps. The available FAA and government sources explain certification and experience requirements, but do not establish a universal end-to-end timeline from starting flight training to finishing regional-airline training.
The FAA sets minimum certification requirements for air carriers, while each airline sets its own experience minimums. The FAA says individual airlines may require 1,000 or 2,000 hours or more; those figures are illustrative, not current regional-airline-specific requirements. Airlines may also value particular experience, such as turbine, jet, or specific-aircraft time, and standards can shift with market conditions. Why 250 hours is not usually the finish line
The FAA says a commercial pilot certificate requires 250 total flight hours. That certificate is not the same as meeting an airline’s hiring minimum or being eligible for an airline first-officer role. Airline requirements can be higher, and an applicant must also meet the applicable certificate, rating, and experience requirements. FAA: How do I get a commercial pilot license (certificate)?

How the 1,500-hour milestone and R-ATP routes differ
Many pilots plan around 1,500 total hours, but it is not a universal threshold for every qualifying first officer. The FAA describes restricted-privileges ATP (R-ATP) eligibility, which can allow a qualified pilot to serve as a co-pilot before reaching 1,500 hours. Eligibility depends on meeting the requirements for a specific route; simply holding an aviation degree does not automatically qualify someone for a reduced-hour minimum. FAA: Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program
| Route or milestone | Flight-hour figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial pilot certificate | 250 total hours | FAA certificate threshold; not an airline hiring minimum. FAA FAQ publication date is not stated. |
| Standard ATP milestone commonly used for planning | 1,500 hours | Common reference point, not a universal requirement for every pilot who may qualify through an R-ATP route. |
| Qualifying bachelor’s aviation-major graduate seeking R-ATP | 1,000 hours | Conditional on meeting applicable requirements and graduating from a qualifying program at an authorized institution; FAA AC 61-139, issued July 12, 2013. |
| Certain qualifying associate’s aviation-major graduate seeking R-ATP | 1,250 hours | Conditional on meeting applicable requirements and graduating from a qualifying program at an authorized institution; FAA AC 61-139, issued July 12, 2013. |
The reduced thresholds are not automatic benefits of any aviation degree. The FAA guidance describes authorization for institutions to certify eligible graduates of specified programs. Check the program and all applicable eligibility conditions before treating a reduced-hour route as available. FAA Advisory Circular 61-139

How long might it take to build the hours?
A GAO-hosted report recounts an earlier FAA-and-industry estimate that flight-school graduates could need an additional one to two years to reach 1,500 hours. That is historical context, not a current average, a regional-airline-specific estimate, or a guarantee. The report does not establish how long a pilot today will take to meet a particular airline’s minimums. GAO report on the pilot supply and training pipeline
Calendar time cannot be inferred from a flight-hour requirement alone. Pilots build experience at different rates, may pursue different certificate routes, and may need experience beyond a total-hour threshold to match an airline’s standards. No current representative published average for the complete journey from zero flight experience to a regional-airline first-officer job is established by these sources.

What to check when estimating your own timeline
- Your endpoint: Decide whether you mean reaching an FAA eligibility threshold, meeting an airline’s minimums, being hired, or completing airline training.
- Your certificate path: Identify whether you are pursuing standard ATP eligibility or may qualify for an R-ATP route, including a qualifying higher-education or military pathway.
- Your hour-building pace: Estimate when you can reach the applicable flight-hour threshold, rather than assuming a set number of years from the threshold itself.
- The airline’s current requirements: Review the carrier’s published hiring standards and the kinds of experience it values. FAA guidance notes that airline thresholds vary and can change with market conditions.
- Program eligibility: If relying on reduced R-ATP hours through a degree, verify that the institution and program meet FAA conditions and that you meet all remaining requirements.
Bottom line on the timeline
For a U.S. pilot, the time to qualify for regional-airline first-officer work is personal and airline-dependent. A 1,500-hour plan can take substantial time after initial training; an eligible pilot may have a lower R-ATP hour threshold, while an airline may set its own additional experience standards. Treat the historical one-to-two-year estimate only as a dated reference for reaching 1,500 hours—not as a promise about hiring or training.
