Start by checking what the card buys. A Microsoft or Xbox gift card adds money to your Microsoft account; a Minecraft prepaid card unlocks a specific game, subscription, or Marketplace currency. Use the redemption page that matches the product and sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive it.
Choose the right redemption page

These products are not interchangeable. A Microsoft or Xbox gift card adds account balance for eligible purchases; it does not directly grant a Minecraft game or Minecoins. Microsoft explains that redeemed Microsoft and Xbox codes add balance to the Microsoft account for purchases through Microsoft Store online, Windows, or Xbox (Microsoft Support).

Redeem a Minecraft prepaid game or content card
- Find the code. It may be under a scratch-off panel on a physical card, on a receipt, in a retailer’s order details or confirmation email, or in the message from the person who gave you the code.
- Open Minecraft’s official redemption page.
- Enter the 25-character code and sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the game or content.
- Check the product shown on the confirmation screen, then confirm to apply it to the account.
- Follow the confirmation page’s instructions to download or access the product. The next step depends on what the card covers.
Check the account before confirming: redeemed codes are tied to the account used in the process, and Minecraft codes can only be used once.
Redeem a Microsoft or Xbox gift card
- Go to redeem.microsoft.com.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account where you want the balance.
- Enter or paste the code and follow the on-screen prompts.
After redemption, the amount is added to that account for eligible Microsoft purchases. If your goal is a Minecraft game or a specific Minecraft product, verify that the card is an account-balance card rather than a Minecraft prepaid card before redeeming.

Check special Minecraft card types
Java & Bedrock Edition for PC
Minecraft says to use the code on the back of the Java & Bedrock Edition card or the code printed on the store receipt. Confirm the edition and platform shown on the card before redeeming.
Older Java Edition-only cards
If you bought a Minecraft Java Edition-only card before December 1, 2020, Minecraft directs you to contact Minecraft Player Care for redemption help.

Realms Plus, Minecraft Legends, and Minecraft Dungeons
These are distinct prepaid products listed on Minecraft’s redemption page. Follow the product-specific instructions there rather than assuming the card unlocks the standard Minecraft game.
Minecoins
Minecoins are Minecraft Marketplace currency, not a game license or Microsoft account balance. Redeem the 25-character prepaid code through the Microsoft account or Minecraft.net redemption page, then open Minecraft and check the Marketplace balance. Minecoins can be spent on Marketplace content such as skin packs, texture packs, worlds, and mash-up packs.

“My Minecraft redeem code is not working, what do I do?”
- Recheck similar characters. Look carefully for O versus 0 and I versus 1, and make sure every character was entered.
- Confirm the code type and destination. A 10-digit Minecraft code uses xbox.codetocontent.com, not the standard 25-character field. Microsoft balance cards belong on Microsoft’s redeem-code page.
- Check the signed-in account. Sign out and verify you are using the Microsoft account intended to receive the game or content.
- Check whether it was already used. Minecraft codes are single-use. If the code was redeemed previously, it cannot be applied again.
- Escalate with proof of purchase. If the code still fails, contact Minecraft Support and provide proof of purchase. Older Java-only cards and some region-specific codes may have restrictions.
