BYD overtook Tesla by different measures at different times: it led when plug-in hybrids were counted alongside battery-electric cars by 2022, and it became the leading battery-electric car company in the second half of 2023, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). In 2025, BYD reported more battery-electric vehicle sales than Tesla reported vehicle deliveries, though those two figures use different categories.
The lead reflects a mix of lower-priced models, in-house battery supply, a wider range of new-energy vehicles and overseas expansion—not one proven cause. For a financial comparison, sales volume is only one measure: revenue, profit and margins answer different questions.
What does “beat Tesla” mean?
The answer depends on which vehicles and period are being compared. “Electric car” can mean battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) alone or BEVs plus plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). BYD sells both, while Tesla’s reported vehicle deliveries are not a like-for-like measure of BYD’s BEV sales.

How BYD’s strategy helped it grow
Lower-priced models and battery supply
The IEA describes BYD’s approach as prioritizing cheaper models while protecting margins through the development of in-house battery supply chains. Owning more of the battery supply chain can give a carmaker greater control over a key component, but the available figures do not establish that this factor alone caused BYD to overtake Tesla.
The IEA estimated approximate gross profit per electric vehicle at USD 10,000–15,000 for Tesla and around USD 6,000 for BYD for 2022–2023. These are approximate estimates for that period, not current margins. A broader new-energy vehicle range
Counting BEVs and PHEVs gives BYD credit for a wider set of plug-in vehicles than a BEV-only comparison. That breadth contributed to its earlier lead on the combined measure; it should not be confused with its later BEV-only lead.
Capabilities across components
BYD has described capabilities across batteries and other EV components as part of its business. Such company-reported capabilities help explain the breadth of its industrial strategy, but they are not, by themselves, independent proof of cost advantages or vehicle performance.

BYD reported that its overseas new-energy passenger-car sales exceeded 240,000 units in 2023, a 337% year-on-year increase. The company also said it introduced vehicles in 64 countries and regions. These are BYD-reported figures: markets where vehicles were introduced are not the same as units sold, and the sales figure covers overseas new-energy passenger cars rather than a global BEV-only total. What Tesla’s pricing and financial results add to the comparison
Tesla’s FY2024 Form 10-K attributed lower automotive sales revenue chiefly to lower average selling prices following price reductions and financing offers, alongside fewer combined cash deliveries of Model 3 and Model Y. This is Tesla’s explanation for its reported revenue change in that fiscal year; it is not proof that price reductions alone explain the later sales ranking.

The Associated Press reported that BYD sold 2.26 million BEVs in 2025, up 28%, while Tesla reported 1.64 million vehicle deliveries, down 9%. This comparison supports the conclusion that BYD had the larger reported BEV sales figure, but the categories differ: BYD’s figure is BEV sales, while Tesla’s is vehicle deliveries.
The same AP report said BYD recorded RMB 804 billion in revenue and RMB 32.6 billion in profit for 2025, with profit down 19%. Greater revenue therefore did not mean improved profitability. AP also reported sales weakness and price-war pressure in early 2026, a reminder that leadership by volume does not guarantee that growth or profits will keep rising. Technology ambitions are not the same as verified results
When BYD announced a charging system, founder and chairman Wang Chuanfu said: “To completely solve users’ anxiety over charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time for EVs as short as the refueling time for fuel vehicles.” That statement describes an ambition, not a verified charging-time result. - Check the vehicle category: distinguish BEVs from totals that include PHEVs or other new-energy vehicles.
- Check the period and geography: a half-year global ranking is not an annual regional sales comparison.

- Read company disclosures in context: company-reported market expansion and explanations of financial changes are useful, but they do not establish a single cause for a sales lead.
