1047 Games’ 2021 venture-capital raise helped the studio expand its team and hire experienced developers, CEO Ian Proulx said in a 2024 GamesBeat interview. But the interview does not disclose an audited breakdown of the $100 million by expense category. It describes the company’s funding strategy and the game it planned at the time; later official updates show that Splitgate 2’s direction changed before its December 2025 relaunch as SPLITGATE: Arena Reloaded.
What did 1047 Games say its venture funding paid for?
GamesBeat reported that 1047 Games raised $100 million in venture capital in 2021. In the interview, published September 30, 2024 and updated September 18, 2025, Proulx connected that funding to a larger team and more experienced hires. He said the studio had grown to more than 175 people and cited an audio director from God of War Ragnarok, a lead weapon artist from Call of Duty, and an animation director with Ubisoft experience as examples of senior talent brought in to improve production quality.
Proulx’s stated goal was to make Splitgate 2 look and feel like a triple-A title. He said, “The most obvious thing you’ll see is the overall quality and level of detail.” He also said, “We’ve put that funding to good use.” These are his account and characterization of the investment; the interview does not provide a ledger showing how much went to staffing, development, marketing, or other costs. Proulx also said in that interview that 1047 was financially in good shape, had raised enough, and had made money. Those remarks reflect what he told GamesBeat at the time, not an independent audit of the company’s finances.

What game was the funding meant to support?
In 2024, Proulx described Splitgate 2 as a free-to-play multiplayer shooter planned for 2025. The interview presented it as a 4v4 game built around three factions, with differences in weapons, equipment, attachments, and perks. Customization and live operations were part of the plan for keeping the game evolving after release.
Proulx said 1047 wanted to focus its resources on multiplayer rather than a single-player campaign, which he described as expensive. He characterized live operations as a difficult but essential challenge for sustaining a multiplayer game. These statements describe the development strategy and ambitions he discussed in 2024; they do not establish that every planned feature shipped.

He contrasted the larger production with the first Splitgate, which he described as beginning as a school project and growing from a small team. GamesBeat reported Proulx’s statement that the original game had more than 22 million downloads since 2019. The interview gave no methodology for that figure, and downloads are not the same as unique players. Proulx also cited approximately 4,000 concurrent users during the closed alpha of the sequel; that is a historical test-period figure, not a current player count.
How did Splitgate 2’s direction change?
After the interview, 1047 Games said it was refocusing the sequel on arena combat, movement, gunplay, and portal combat. In its September 2025 update, the company said it was temporarily removing Onslaught and Battle Royale from the beta while concentrating on an Arena-first relaunch. What does the funding story establish—and what does it not?
The interview supports a clear but limited conclusion: Proulx said the 2021 venture raise enabled 1047 Games to expand its team and bring in experienced staff to improve production quality. It does not show how the money was allocated across budget lines, nor does it independently verify the company’s financial condition, download figures, or user counts.

The game’s later change in direction is relevant context for understanding the investment’s intended product, but it is not evidence of how the venture funds were spent. The 2024 interview records the plan at that moment; the later official updates document a material shift toward an Arena-first relaunch.
