Applications for the Gujarat High Court’s 2022 Civil Judge recruitment are closed. The High Court’s advertisement RC/0719/2022 invited applications for approximately 219 posts, with a deadline of 2 March 2022. The original preliminary-exam date was later postponed; it should not be treated as the final date. Anyone looking for current vacancies should check the High Court of Gujarat’s current openings archive for the latest notices.

What the 2022 recruitment offered

The High Court of Gujarat advertised approximately 219 regular Civil Judge vacancies, including existing and future vacancies. The advertisement reserved the right to change the number. Its category breakdown was:

Category Advertised vacancies
General 112
Scheduled Castes (SC) 15
Scheduled Tribes (ST) 33
Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) 59
Total 219

The notice also listed 9 vacancies for physically disabled candidates as a 4% horizontal category; these are not an additional category to add to the total.

When applications closed

The online application window ran from 3 February 2022 at noon until 2 March 2022 at 23:59. The deadline has passed, so the 2022 notice is not an open application opportunity. The dates and vacancy information were published in the official short recruitment notice and detailed advertisement.

Who was eligible under the 2022 notice

Education and work status

Applicants needed a law degree from a university recognized by law in India, as well as basic knowledge of computer applications or operation supported by a certificate from a qualifying government or recognized institute. The notice described two work-status routes as of the application deadline: practicing as an advocate in civil and/or criminal jurisdiction, or working in courts or allied departments. Candidates applying through the court or allied-department route also needed an LL.B. from a recognized university.

For law graduates from academic year 2009–10 onward, passing the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) was required to be considered a practicing advocate. Applicants who had taken AIBE but were awaiting their result or certificate could apply with an undertaking. They would be rejected if they had not cleared AIBE by viva-voce or document verification.

Gujarati language requirement

Candidates who had not passed both secondary and higher-secondary examinations with Gujarati at the higher level had to pass a Gujarati language proficiency test. Candidates who met that schooling requirement were exempt from the test.

Age and application fee

As of the application deadline, the notice set a maximum age of 35 for General-category candidates and 38 for SC, ST, SEBC, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen, subject to specific service-related relaxation provisions. It also provided a one-year upper-age relaxation for this recruitment. These were not universal limits; category and service conditions affected the applicable rule.

The application fee was ₹1,000 plus bank charges for General-category candidates and ₹500 plus bank charges for the listed reserved and other eligible categories. The notice stated that fees would not be refunded or adjusted against a later recruitment.

How the selection process worked

Preliminary examination

The preliminary examination was an elimination test of 100 marks and two hours. It used one-mark multiple-choice questions, with a 0.33-mark deduction for a wrong or multiple answer. The English-language paper covered criminal and civil statutes, general knowledge, English, reasoning, numerical and mental ability, and computer basics. A minimum 50% was required to progress.

Gujarati proficiency test

Candidates required to take the Gujarati test faced a 50-mark paper lasting 1.5 hours and needed at least 40%. The listed components were Gujarati essay writing, comprehension answers, synonyms and antonyms, letter writing, translation between Gujarati and English, précis writing, and Gujarati grammar.

Main written examination

The descriptive main examination consisted of two three-hour papers worth 100 marks each. The question papers were in English; answers could be written in English or Gujarati unless otherwise directed.

Paper Subject matter listed in the notice
Criminal Indian Penal Code; Code of Criminal Procedure; Indian Evidence Act; Gujarat Prohibition Act; Probation of Offenders Act; Juvenile Justice Act; Domestic Violence Act; Negotiable Instruments Act; POCSO Act; Information Technology Act.
Civil Code of Civil Procedure; Limitation Act; Indian Contract Act; Constitution of India; Specific Relief Act; Gujarat Court Fees Act; Transfer of Property Act; Arbitration and Conciliation Act; Commercial Courts Act; succession and personal laws; legal maxims.

To qualify for viva-voce, candidates needed at least 40% in each main paper and an aggregate of at least 45% for SC/ST candidates or 50% for all other candidates. For preparation based on this historical syllabus, bare acts for Civil Judge exam preparation may be useful, but the advertisement does not endorse any publisher or edition, and this list should not be assumed to represent a later recruitment’s syllabus.

Viva-voce and final merit

The viva-voce carried 50 marks, with a minimum 40% required for inclusion in the select list. The High Court described the interview as an assessment of suitability, including legal knowledge, judgment, communication, ethics and intellectual depth. Final selection was based on aggregate main-examination and viva-voce marks; preliminary-exam and Gujarati-test marks did not count toward final merit.

Was the preliminary examination postponed?

Yes. The original advertisement tentatively scheduled the preliminary examination and Gujarati test for 15 May 2022. The High Court’s archive later listed an “IMPORTANT NOTICE: Preliminary Examination & Test of Gujarati Language for Direct Recruitment to the cadre of Civil Judges Postponed.” The reviewed listing does not establish a replacement date or the completed final schedule, so the original date should not be presented as the date the exam ultimately took place.

The original tentative schedule also listed the main written examination for 17 July 2022 and viva-voce for 9 October 2022. Because the preliminary stage was postponed, those dates should likewise be understood as tentative advertised dates, not confirmed final dates.

Pay scale stated in the advertisement

The 2022 notice stated a pay scale of ₹27,700–770–₹33,090–930–₹40,530–1,080–₹44,850, plus applicable allowances. This describes the scale in that recruitment advertisement, not current pay advice or confirmation of present compensation.

Where to check for current vacancies

For openings after the 2022 recruitment, use the official High Court of Gujarat current openings archive and verify the dates, eligibility, vacancies and selection rules in the relevant current notice. The archive is updated over time, so a past recruitment page or copied schedule is not a reliable guide to a new application.
