Gilead Sciences closed its Seattle office on January 17, 2025, affecting 72 workers, according to Washington state reports. Gilead said the decision was intended to align resources with its long-term strategic goals; the company also described several options for some employees.

What happened at Gilead’s Seattle office?

Gilead confirmed it would close its Seattle office in the Eastlake neighborhood, GeekWire reported. Washington’s January 2025 report later recorded that the facility closed on January 17, 2025, and identified November 13, 2024, as the announcement date. GeekWire’s report and the Washington Office of Financial Management’s January 2025 report document those details.

How many employees were affected?

72 employees — Washington State Office of Financial Management, 2024. The state’s December 2024 report listed 72 workers affected by the closure, effective January 17, 2025. Its January 2025 report described the facility as closed and recorded 72 job losses. These are reported totals; they do not establish each person’s employment outcome. See the December report and January report.

Why did Gilead close the office?

Gilead’s stated rationale, as reported contemporaneously by GeekWire, was resource alignment: “We are closing our Seattle office as part of our efforts to align resources with our long-term strategic goals.” GeekWire attributed the statement to the company but did not name a speaker or provide a job title. What options did the company describe for employees?

GeekWire reported that Gilead said some employees could work remotely from Seattle, apply for other positions at the company, or request severance and job-placement services. The report does not quantify how many employees were eligible for or chose any of these options, so it does not establish an individual worker’s outcome or entitlement.

What does the state WARN information establish?

Washington’s Employment Security Department says its WARN database records employer and location, effective date, worker count, action type, and the date a notice was received. Its guidance explains when state notice rules apply. The database is a record of notices, not a complete account of individual employment circumstances. See the Washington WARN database information.
