The “family jewel” was an emerald necklace Jennifer Gwynne said Elon Musk gave her, and it was offered in a time-limited RR Auction sale in 2022. The auction was scheduled to close September 14, 2022; the reported bids were snapshots taken before closing, not confirmed final prices. Gwynne’s account tied the stones to a Musk family emerald mine, but the mine’s location is disputed and the source does not independently authenticate that provenance.
What was for sale?
Jennifer Gwynne, whom Gizmodo described as Musk’s college girlfriend, consigned an emerald necklace and related memorabilia to RR Auction. The necklace lot included two original photographs: one showing Musk with Gwynne and his mother, Maye, and another of Musk and Gwynne at a college formal.
The wider sale included about 20 photographs of Musk from the mid-1990s and a signed birthday card. Gizmodo reported the card’s inscription as “Happy Birthday Jennifer (aka. Boo-Boo) Love Elon.”
What did the necklace’s provenance claim establish?
Gwynne said Musk gave her the necklace during a holiday visit to his mother’s home in Toronto. In a description of the jewelry on the RR Auction website, she wrote: “His mom had a number of these necklaces in a case in her bedroom and Elon told me they were from his father’s emerald mine in South Africa,” as quoted by Lauren Leffer in Gizmodo’s September 13, 2022 article.

That is Gwynne’s account of what Musk told her, not independent authentication of the stones’ source or ownership history. The same Gizmodo report notes a conflicting location: Business Insider reporting it referenced placed Errol Musk’s emerald mine in Zambia. The available reporting does not settle whether the mine was in South Africa or Zambia.
When was the auction, and what were the reported bids?
RR Auction’s sale began in late August 2022 and was scheduled to end September 14. Gizmodo’s September 13 report said the necklace had received 36 bids and stood at $8,784 at that point. The birthday card’s then-current high bid was $13,314. Both figures were pre-close snapshots; the cited report does not establish either lot’s final hammer price, a later resale price, or an independent market valuation.

Why was Gwynne selling the memorabilia?
Gizmodo reported that Gwynne told Inside Edition she planned to use the proceeds to help fund her 13-year-old stepson’s future college education. The report also said Gwynne and Musk dated around 1994–1995, while Musk attended the University of Pennsylvania; they met as resident advisers in campus dorms.

This was a historical 2022 auction, not a current offer. The cited report does not establish where the necklace is now, whether it has been resold, or whether an active listing exists. Anyone considering a listing should verify it directly with the auction venue and review the current lot description and provenance documentation. A generic emerald necklace listing is not the RR Auction necklace and does not inherit its claimed history.
