GameStop reportedly paid $30,494.70 for a PSA 10 holographic Gengar Pokémon card, but that does not appear to be a standard offer for other customers. HotHardware reported the transaction on December 2, 2025, attributing the payment and a $33,883 valuation to GameStop. GameStop’s public graded-card estimator currently lists a maximum payout of $1,500.
What did GameStop pay for the Gengar card?
HotHardware reported that GameStop said a customer brought a PSA 10 holographic Gengar card to the company’s Grapevine, Texas, headquarters and received $30,494.70. GameStop reportedly assigned the card a value of $33,883 and said it had been authenticated and handled under the Power Packs Buyback Program’s inspection, verification and compliance procedures. HotHardware reported those details on December 2, 2025; the material available does not independently document the transaction or confirm the valuation.
The report attributes this statement to GameStop, without naming an individual speaker: “Any trolls who publicly claim that GameStop trade-in values are bad are hereby factually and demonstrably incorrect.” It also attributes the follow-up, “any further objections are without merit and factually invalid.” These are statements as reported by HotHardware, not independently verified company posts.
Can other customers get a $30,000 trade-in offer?
There is no evidence that the reported amount is a generally available offer. GameStop’s public graded-card estimator currently says eligible cards must be PSA-graded, carry a Lighthouse label, and receive a grade of 8, 9 or 10. It lists a maximum payout of $1,500 in cash or store credit. That published cap does not explain how the reported $30,494.70 transaction was handled, so the two figures should not be treated as equivalent terms or as proof that the exceptional payment is available at participating stores.

The public estimator says offers are final. GameStop’s broader trade terms note that eligible products and locations are limited and that GameStop determines condition and trade value; those general provisions should not be mistaken for the specific graded-card rules.
How does GameStop’s Power Packs program relate to the trade?
Power Packs is a separate GameStop card product and program, not a promise that every graded-card trade will receive a particular price. GameStop’s Power Packs product page describes digital and physical graded-card offerings, including Pokémon. For digital packs, customers can reveal a PSA-graded card and choose to have it shipped, keep it in a PSA Vault account, or sell it through the Power Packs site.

The Power Packs terms describe a limited buyback option for digital pack contents. They warn that card values fluctuate and that no specific card or value is guaranteed. Those terms provide context for the program cited in the Gengar story, but they do not establish how the reported headquarters transaction was priced or whether it followed the public estimator’s current cap.
How should you judge a graded Pokémon-card trade?
A grade alone is not enough to determine whether an offer is attractive. Before accepting a trade, compare the specific card and edition, verify the certification, and look at recent sales of genuinely comparable copies. The reviewed material does not establish the Gengar card’s exact edition, certificate number, provenance, independent market value, or a comparable sale sufficient to determine whether GameStop’s reported payment was above or below fair market value.

- Identify the exact card: Confirm its edition and other identifying details; the report calls this card a PSA 10 holographic Gengar but does not specify its edition.
- Check the grade and certification: Make sure the certification details match the card being offered. The report does not provide a certificate number.
- Compare like with like: Seek recent sales for the same edition and grade rather than relying on a headline valuation or asking prices alone.
- Compare the payment terms: Determine whether the offer is cash or store credit and account for any fees or delays if considering another selling route. The available sources do not rank alternative marketplaces.
- Confirm eligibility and finality: Check the current rules for the specific program and store before handing over a card; the public estimator says its offers are final.
What remains unverified about the record-sized trade?
The reported transaction is not accompanied in the reviewed material by an original transaction record, certificate number, direct company post, independent valuation, or information about what happened to the card afterward. Nor does the available evidence reconcile the reported payment with the $1,500 maximum shown on GameStop’s public estimator. The story is therefore evidence of what GameStop reportedly said about one trade—not proof of a repeatable $30,000 offer or an independently established market price.
