Mehul Choksi alleges that he was kidnapped in Antigua on 23 May 2021, taken by boat to Dominica and assaulted during the journey. He accused India of orchestrating the operation; the Indian government denied involvement. Choksi’s UK civil case ended in October 2026 without a trial deciding whether the alleged abduction occurred.
What Choksi alleges happened
In a 6 February 2026 judgment on applications for security for costs, the England and Wales High Court summarized Choksi’s claim: he alleged that six defendants conspired to kidnap him in Antigua on 23 May 2021, take him unlawfully to India, and assaulted him on the boat journey to Dominica. The claim sought damages for alleged physical and psychiatric injuries, false imprisonment, unlawful detention, assault and battery. These were allegations recorded by the court, not findings that the events occurred. Read the High Court judgment.
Choksi’s own website gives a more detailed account, including allegations of assault, taser use and the involvement of people he says claimed to be Indian intelligence agents. Those details remain his account, not independently established facts. Choksi’s account.
What India says—and what the UK court decided
Choksi’s position was that India had both the motive and resources to arrange the alleged abduction. At a June 2025 hearing, his lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told the court: “The evidence points inevitably to India being behind this – they had the motivation, they had the resources.” That was counsel’s submission, not a judicial conclusion.

India denied involvement. Reuters reported that the government’s lawyer, Harish Salve, said in court filings that “there is no evidence of India having anything to do with the alleged events.” The High Court’s February 2026 judgment summarized the claim while dealing with security for costs; it did not determine whether India was involved or whether the alleged kidnapping happened. Reuters’ report on the parties’ positions.
How the UK case ended
In October 2026, Choksi discontinued his remaining claim against the Indian government and Barbara Jarabik after the High Court struck out claims against four other defendants for failing to provide court-ordered security for their legal costs, according to Antigua News. The proceedings ended without a trial resolving the disputed journey. The outcome was procedural: it was neither a ruling that the alleged abduction occurred nor a decision dismissing that allegation after a trial on its merits. Antigua News’ account of the case’s ending.
Antigua News reported that the security amount was about US$896,752, using the exchange rate specified for 25 September. It was security for potential legal costs—not a fine, compensation award or payment to Choksi. Antigua News.
What happened after Choksi reached Dominica
The High Court’s procedural summary says Choksi came into the hands of Dominican authorities after arriving in Dominica. He was able to see lawyers, who applied for habeas corpus; he was released on bail and returned to Antigua. The judgment also says he later came to be in Belgium on remand pending India’s extradition proceedings. Reuters reported that he was arrested in Belgium in April 2025. High Court judgment; Reuters.

How the case relates to the bank-fraud allegations
The alleged abduction is separate from the Indian criminal allegations against Choksi. Reuters reported that Punjab National Bank said in 2018 that it had discovered alleged fraud worth $1.8 billion. India wants Choksi over alleged involvement; Reuters reported that he and his nephew Nirav Modi deny wrongdoing. That reported bank figure concerns the bank’s alleged-fraud announcement, not the alleged abduction, and does not establish either the abduction claim or criminal liability. Reuters’ report.
