Did Francis Ford Coppola Sell His $1 Million Watch? The Auction Result

Coppola’s unique F.P. Journe prototype sold for $10,755,000—well above Phillips’ estimate of more than $1 million. His earlier comments about money invested in Megalopolis do not establish current insolvency.

Yes. Francis Ford Coppola’s unique F.P. Journe FFC Prototype sold at auction in December 2025 for $10,755,000. Phillips had estimated it at more than $1 million, so that earlier figure was not the final sale price. Coppola’s “broke” remarks referred to money he said he had invested and borrowed for Megalopolis; they do not establish that he is currently insolvent.

What happened to Coppola’s watch?

Phillips’ official catalogue records Coppola’s F.P. Journe FFC Prototype as sold at its New York Watch Auction XIII in December 2025 for $10,755,000. The auction house’s pre-sale estimate was in excess of $1 million. The estimate and result are different kinds of figures: the first was Phillips’ assessment before bidding, while the second is the recorded price for this completed auction lot.

The watch was a unique platinum prototype made for Coppola, dated circa 2021 in Phillips’ catalogue. Phillips describes its unusual display as animated fingers indicating digital hours, with a rotating dial indicating minutes. Its catalogue calls it a historically important prototype and notes that it came from Coppola’s collection. Phillips’ lot record and sale announcement document the watch and result.

What did Coppola mean when he said he was broke?

In remarks to Rick Rubin on the Tetragrammaton podcast in March 2025, Coppola said: “I don’t have any money because I invested all the money, that I borrowed, to make ‘Megalopolis.’” He added: “It’s basically gone. I think it’ll come back over 15 or 20 years, but I don’t have it now.” The San Francisco Chronicle quoted those remarks in an October 2025 report. The Chronicle’s account presents them as Coppola’s statements about funds tied up in the film, not as an audited account of his assets, liabilities, or present-day solvency.

How do the film’s reported finances fit in?

The Chronicle reported that Coppola invested approximately $120 million in Megalopolis and that the film had brought in about $14 million in box-office receipts. Both are approximate reported figures. They offer context for his comments but do not provide a complete accounting of the film’s financing, later returns, or Coppola’s personal finances. Box-office receipts also should not be treated as a direct measure of what a filmmaker personally receives.

Does the auction price show that other F.P. Journe watches are worth millions?

No. The $10,755,000 result belongs to this unique Coppola prototype at this specific auction. It is not a guaranteed market value for other F.P. Journe watches or a price estimate that can be applied to other owners’ watches. The record establishes what Phillips reported for this one completed sale, not a general valuation rule.
