The GeekWire 200’s September 2025 snapshot put sales-software company Highspot first, fusion startup Helion second and cybersecurity company Chainguard third. The wider list showed a Pacific Northwest startup scene spanning enterprise software, energy, robotics, consumer products, space and defense—not a ranking of consumer brands or a guide to investment opportunities.
What the GeekWire 200’s September 2025 snapshot showed
GeekWire’s October 1, 2025 article presented its Q4 2025 top ten as Highspot, Helion, Chainguard, Truveta, Agility Robotics, iSpot.tv, Brinc, Responsive, Carbon Robotics and Stoke Space. GeekWire said the displayed company data came from LinkedIn Associated Members as of September 2025. The article page also contains a conflicting heading that says “Top 10 Companies – Q2 2025”; its detailed section label and data note point to Q4 2025, so the ranks are best described as the September 2025 snapshot rather than current standings. GeekWire’s October 2025 article
| September 2025 rank | Company | GeekWire-listed employees | One-year employee growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Highspot | 1,044 | +6% |
| 2 | Helion | 349 | +20% |
| 3 | Chainguard | 580 | +166% |
| 4 | Truveta | not stated in the cited examples (GeekWire, September 2025 snapshot) | not stated in the cited examples (GeekWire, September 2025 snapshot) |

The employee counts and growth rates in the table are GeekWire’s figures from its September 2025 data snapshot, not live company headcounts or independently verified performance measures. For example, the ranking placed Chainguard third despite its listed 166% one-year employee growth, while Highspot ranked first with 6% growth. That illustrates why rank should not be read as a simple growth-rate leaderboard.
What kinds of startups made the list?
The sector examples help explain the breadth behind the headline. GeekWire named Helion and Zap Energy in fusion, Group14 in batteries, Brinc, Carbon Robotics and Proprio in robotics and hardware, and Stoke Space, Overland AI and Echodyne in space and defense. The consumer-facing examples included Wyze Labs, Armoire and Viome. Tin Can stood out for a landline-style telephone designed for children. GeekWire’s October 2025 article

That mix matters for readers interpreting “startup growth.” Many firms in the index sell software to businesses, build industrial equipment or work on infrastructure that may take years to commercialize. The list’s sector variety is evidence of a broader regional startup landscape; it does not mean every company has a consumer product available to buy.
How GeekWire says it builds the ranking
In a June 2025 explanation, GeekWire said its ranking considered employee growth over the prior 12 months in both percentage and net jobs added. It gave larger companies some credit for scale but weighted growth more heavily, and used LinkedIn follower counts as a rough public-traction signal, with a curve intended to account for younger companies. Editorial judgment—including information about funding, layoffs and newsroom knowledge—also played a role. GeekWire’s June 2025 methodology explanation

GeekWire also said companies founded 15 years earlier or more graduate from the index, while mergers, acquisitions and majority-sale private-equity transactions can remove companies. The publication described using Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT to aggregate data, generate rankings and check accuracy. It did not publish exact factor weights or a reproducible scoring equation in that explanation, and later methodology details may change.
How much weight should you put on a company’s rank?
GeekWire calls the index non-scientific and says specific ranks should be taken “with a grain of salt.” Its method combines growth indicators, rough public-traction data and editorial assessment, so the result is best treated as a directional editorial snapshot—not a validated measure of company quality, future prospects or investment performance. Employee growth can signal hiring momentum, but a percentage can look dramatic from a small starting base; net additions and company size provide different context. LinkedIn-derived figures are also a snapshot rather than a company’s audited workforce disclosure. A rank alone does not establish profitability, financing terms, product-market fit or whether a startup is a suitable investment.

What this means for consumers and investors
The GeekWire 200 is useful as a map of companies and sectors gaining attention in the Pacific Northwest. It is not a shopping list: the 2025 article’s concrete consumer-product example is Tin Can’s kids’ landline-style phone, while the other examples range from smart-home devices to enterprise software and industrial technology. The article does not establish current product availability or a current retailer listing.
For personal-finance decisions, do not treat inclusion or a high rank as an investment recommendation. Private startup shares may be difficult to access and evaluate, and the ranking does not provide the financial disclosures or risk analysis needed to assess an investment. Use it to identify companies or industries for further independent research, not as a substitute for that research.
