PLAY Airlines is no longer flying: the Icelandic airline ceased operations on 29 September 2025, and its flights were cancelled. The firsthand account available for assessing what flying with PLAY was like dates to 2022, so it offers a snapshot of one traveler’s trip—not a representative review of the airline’s full service in 2025.
Is PLAY Airlines still flying?
No. Iceland’s Ministry of Infrastructure reported on 29 September 2025 that PLAY had ceased operations and all flights were cancelled. The UK Civil Aviation Authority also confirmed the closure and cancellation of PLAY-operated flights. Iceland’s government notice and the CAA notice are the relevant official updates.
That makes this a retrospective, not a booking recommendation. The available firsthand review was published by Condé Nast Traveler in November 2022 and describes a single itinerary from New York Stewart through Boston Logan to Iceland. Its observations can help explain the airline’s low-cost model, but they do not establish how PLAY performed across all routes or in 2025. Read the 2022 account.
What was flying with PLAY like?
In her account, writer Kristin Braswell described the trip as straightforward and affordable for her, and reported attentive service. The aircraft cabin was all economy, with no Wi-Fi or power outlets. Food and drinks were available for purchase onboard. These are observations from one traveler’s dated trip, not a systematic customer survey.

The fare structure mattered as much as the cabin experience. Braswell reported paying $347 roundtrip for her particular itinerary and described separate charges for baggage, seat assignments, and priority boarding. That historical price should not be treated as a typical fare or a 2025 price. For a low-cost ticket, the useful comparison is the total for the specific trip after adding the services and baggage you need—not the advertised base fare alone.
Did PLAY include a carry-on bag?
In the 2022 account, baggage was among the items that could cost extra. PLAY’s historical fare-bundle page also showed that inclusions depended on the bundle: its PLAY flex listing included a personal item, an overhead carry-on measuring no more than 56 × 45 × 25 cm and weighing up to 12 kg, and one checked bag up to 23 kg. It also listed seat selection anywhere in the aircraft and date flexibility subject to any fare difference. PLAY’s fare-bundle information is historical, not a live policy.

Those allowances do not establish what another airline will accept. When planning a trip with a different carrier, check that operating airline’s current baggage dimensions, weight limits, and fare inclusions before choosing a bag or assuming it can travel in the cabin.

If you paid by card or booked a package in Iceland
Iceland’s government advises passengers who paid by card to contact their card company first. Passengers who bought a flight as part of a package tour should contact their tour operator. The notice says passengers may have claims under passenger-rights rules and may complain to the Icelandic Transport Authority about costs incurred when booking another flight. Any claim in bankruptcy must be filed with PLAY’s bankruptcy estate. These are possible routes, not assurances that a claim will succeed or be paid. See the Icelandic government’s passenger guidance.
If you are a UK passenger
The UK Civil Aviation Authority says passengers who paid PLAY directly by credit card may have protection under Section 75. Debit- or charge-card customers should contact their card issuer, while passengers who booked through an agent should contact that agent. The CAA also identifies scheduled airline failure insurance as a possible source of protection, but coverage varies by policy. Check your card terms, booking route, and insurance wording rather than assuming a particular remedy applies. Read the CAA’s guidance.

What this retrospective can—and cannot—tell you
The 2022 account gives a concrete example of PLAY’s trade-offs: a low-cost fare structure with separately charged extras, an all-economy cabin, and no onboard Wi-Fi or power outlets on the reported trip. The historical fare-bundle listing shows that some bundles included more baggage and seat benefits than others. Neither source provides a representative 2025 punctuality or cancellation rate, or a comparable 2025 total-fare analysis against other airlines. Those performance and price comparisons cannot be established from this evidence.
PLAY is now closed, so its past experience is relevant mainly as a lesson in comparing airline costs: add the fees for the baggage, seats, and services you actually need before judging a fare. For passengers affected by the shutdown, the next steps depend on the booking and payment circumstances and the rules or policy that apply to them.
