ICON Aircraft filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 4, 2024, amid financial pressure, then sold substantially all of its assets to an affiliate of Dürkopp Adler GmbH in June 2024. A separate liquidation plan took effect on January 1, 2025. Those events explain the company’s financial restructuring, but do not establish whether ICON A5 aircraft are being built or what support is available today. So, what happened to Icon Aircraft? Here is what the filings and contemporaneous reporting show.
Why ICON Aircraft sought bankruptcy protection
ICON and affiliated debtors filed voluntary Chapter 11 cases on April 4, 2024. The company sought to continue operating while pursuing a sale through the bankruptcy process. Chapter 11 provided a court-supervised way to market and sell the business and its assets; filing did not itself mean that a sale had already closed.
SSG Capital Advisors, the company’s investment banker in the case, attributed the financial strain to rising input costs, supply-chain disruptions, certification delays, and disputes involving management and shareholders. SSG said ICON borrowed additional capital from investors and developed an unsustainable capital structure. It also said its pre-filing marketing process did not produce an investor willing to invest outside bankruptcy. These are SSG’s account of the company’s pressures, not findings by the bankruptcy court. SSG Capital Advisors’ case overview
How large was the reported debt?
AOPA’s April 2024 account of the bankruptcy documents reported $173.7 million in total debt at the time of filing: $170.4 million in unsecured notes and $3.3 million owed to vendors and suppliers. AOPA also reported that the 30 largest creditors were owed $68 million, including $65 million owed to East West Bank. The filing documents identified $105.4 million in unsecured notes from three lenders. These are historical filing-period amounts, not a statement of current liabilities. AOPA’s April 2024 report

AOPA reported that Pudong Science and Technology Investment (Cayman) Co. Ltd. supplied $93 million of the $105.4 million in unsecured notes and was described in a court affidavit as a major lender and approximately 50 percent equity holder. That account illustrates how dependent the company was on substantial investor funding; it does not establish present ownership or debt.
What the production figures suggest—and what they do not
An affidavit filed in support of the bankruptcy petition said ICON needed to produce and sell eight to 10 aircraft per month to break even, according to AOPA. The historical delivery and revenue figures AOPA reported were much lower when expressed as a monthly average:

| Period | Deliveries | Revenue | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 36 aircraft | $12.9 million | GAMA figures reported by AOPA |
| 2023 | 33 aircraft | $12.6 million | GAMA figures reported by AOPA |
| 2016 through 2023 | 209 aircraft | Not stated | Deliveries from the first A5 sale through year-end 2023, per GAMA data reported by AOPA |
The break-even threshold is a monthly production-and-sales requirement from a filing affidavit; the delivery counts are annual historical totals. They are not directly interchangeable measures, and together they do not establish what production level, if any, would make a reorganized or successor business viable.
AOPA calculated that 2023 revenue divided by 33 deliveries equaled $381,818 per delivered aircraft. That is a derived billing average based on the reported figures, not a separately reported aircraft price or current list price.

What happened in the sale and liquidation plan
- April 4, 2024: ICON and affiliated debtors filed Chapter 11 cases and sought to continue operations while marketing the business for sale, according to AOPA and SSG.
- June 2024: The bankruptcy court approved the sale of substantially all ICON assets to an affiliate of Dürkopp Adler GmbH, and the transaction closed after required Chinese government approval, according to SSG. The sale proceeded under Section 363, with a stalking-horse bid followed by an auction. SSG says the bidding increased by more than 20% before the buyer’s final offer was selected. FeiRen International Co. Ltd. provided debtor-in-possession financing; SSG says FeiRen was the only party to submit a term sheet for that facility. SSG’s sale-process summary
- December 11, 2024: The bankruptcy court entered an order confirming the debtors’ fourth amended joint Chapter 11 plan of liquidation. Bankruptcy notice confirming the plan
- January 1, 2025: The liquidation plan became effective. This date followed the asset sale; it is not the sale’s closing date.
What the bankruptcy means for ICON A5 owners now
The historical record establishes that substantially all assets were sold and that a liquidation plan later took effect. It does not establish who currently operates the ICON A5 business, whether new aircraft are being produced, or whether service, parts, training, warranty coverage, or owner support is available as of October 8, 2026. Do not treat a statement made during the 2024 case as proof of current operations.
In an April 4, 2024 news release quoted by AOPA, CEO Jerry Meyer said, “We plan to continue to produce and sell aircraft and provide first-rate service, training, and support to our customers.” That was the company’s stated intention during the Chapter 11 process, not confirmation of what happened after the sale or what owners can access today. An owner seeking help should verify current arrangements directly with the relevant business or service provider before relying on a warranty, ordering parts, or scheduling maintenance.

The financial takeaway
ICON’s Chapter 11 filing followed reported liquidity constraints, heavy borrowing, and a gap between the production level its filing affidavit said was needed to break even and its recent annual delivery totals. The company’s assets were sold in June 2024, while its liquidation plan took effect in January 2025. The public facts summarized here explain the restructuring; they do not answer the separate, current question of production or customer support.
