If you want one well-documented GMT watch to start with under €5,000, the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 42 mm (L3.812.4.53.6) is a strong candidate: Longines lists it at a Finland-market recommended retail price of €3,650. It is not a universal winner, and that regional price is not a guarantee of what you will pay elsewhere. Your best choice depends on fit, travel-time operation, configuration and local pricing.
What “best” means for a GMT watch
A GMT watch lets you track a second time zone, usually with an additional 24-hour hand and a scale on the dial or bezel. Some models also let you move the local-hour hand independently when you travel. That distinction matters: frequent travelers may value a jumping local hour, while someone who mainly wants to monitor another time zone may care more about legibility, size or styling.
There is no established market-wide ranking here. The candidates below are useful comparisons supported by manufacturer specifications and regional listings—not an exhaustive list of every GMT available below €5,000.
Strongest directly sourced in-budget candidate: Longines Spirit Zulu Time 42 mm
The Longines Spirit Zulu Time reference L3.812.4.53.6 is an automatic 42 mm GMT. Longines’ Finland-market listing gives it a recommended retail price of €3,650. Longines also says authorized retailers are free to set their own prices, so treat that figure as a regional reference rather than a guaranteed checkout price. Check the exact reference, configuration and local availability before buying.

Longines traces the Zulu name to its first wristwatch series displaying a second time zone, produced in 1925. The company says the Zulu flag appeared on that watch’s dial; “Zulu” refers to “Z,” the designation for universal time used by aviators. How the main comparisons differ
| Model or comparison | What the cited manufacturer information establishes | Price evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Longines Spirit Zulu Time 42 mm, L3.812.4.53.6 | 42 mm; automatic GMT; 10 bar water resistance; COSC certification and silicon balance spring described by Longines; bidirectional ceramic-insert bezel. | €3,650 recommended retail price on Longines’ Finland-market listing, retrieved in 2026. Retailers may set their own prices. |
| TUDOR Black Bay GMT | 41 mm case; 200 m water resistance; jumping local-hour hand. TUDOR says the 24-hour hand and bezel can be used to follow a third time zone. | TUDOR’s US-market page lists a fabric-strap example at $4,925 and a steel-bracelet example at $5,275. These are US-dollar listings, not euro prices, and do not establish whether a particular configuration is under €5,000 in the euro area. |
| Grand Seiko GMT SBGM255 and SBGM257 | Grand Seiko describes a 9S66 GMT watch that displays two time zones and has a three-day power reserve. | €5,200 each on the cited Benelux collection listing, above the €5,000 ceiling. This does not establish that every Grand Seiko GMT is over budget. |
These figures describe different markets, configurations and manufacturer claims; they are not the results of a like-for-like independent test. Compare the exact watch and local price rather than treating currencies as directly interchangeable. TUDOR’s Black Bay GMT family page and Grand Seiko’s Benelux collection listing provide the cited comparison information.
Choose by the way you will use it
If you travel across time zones often
Look for a watch that lets you adjust local time without disturbing the reference time. TUDOR explicitly describes a jumping local-hour hand on the Black Bay GMT. TUDOR also explains that its 24-hour “Snowflake” hand completes one lap of the dial every 24 hours. Its bezel and 24-hour hand can be used to track another zone as well. The cited Longines product information confirms the GMT model and calibre but does not fully establish its setting behavior, so it is not possible to make a supported direct comparison on that point.
If fit is your priority
The cited Longines is 42 mm across and the TUDOR is 41 mm. That one-millimetre difference is only a starting point: wrist shape, lug design, thickness, bracelet articulation and personal preference all affect how a watch wears. Try the exact reference and bracelet or strap you intend to buy.
Rank #3
- Quartz GMT Movement - When used in conjunction with the black and blue rotating bezel, the two-blue and white triangle GMT hand can be used to track a second time zone.
- Stainless-steel - The stainless-steel case and bracelet are resistant to corrosion, rust, and daily wear and tear.
- Date Window - Easily track the date in a dedicated window beside 3 o'clock.
- Enhanced Visibility - Luminant hands ensure readability in low-light conditions.
If water resistance matters
The cited specifications are 10 bar for the Longines reference and 200 m for the TUDOR. Those ratings are not a recommendation to use either watch beyond its manufacturer’s guidance, and water resistance alone does not establish dive-watch certification.
If movement credentials matter
Longines identifies COSC certification and a silicon balance spring for the Zulu Time line. Grand Seiko describes a three-day power reserve for its 9S66 GMT watch. These are manufacturer statements, not independently measured comparative results.
Rank #4
- 38mm stainless steel case
- Day date window on dial
- Acrylic lens
- Stainless steel attachment
- Water resistant to 50m (165 ft): In general, suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, but not diving or snorkeling
Check the real price before deciding
The headline ceiling is €5,000, but the cited prices are not all euro-area quotes: Longines’ figure comes from Finland, Grand Seiko’s from Benelux and TUDOR’s from the United States. Bracelet and strap configurations can also change the listed price. Before treating a watch as within budget, confirm the current price for the exact reference and configuration in your market, including any taxes or retailer pricing that apply.
- Confirm the precise model reference and whether the listing is for a bracelet or strap.
- Check the manufacturer’s regional page and a local authorized retailer for availability and current pricing.
- Compare the full amount you expect to pay, not a foreign-market price converted into euros.
- Revisit prices and stock close to purchase; manufacturer listings and availability can change.
A practical shortlist
Start with the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 42 mm if its size and styling suit you and the local price fits your budget. Put the TUDOR Black Bay GMT on the list if independent local-hour adjustment is especially important, but verify its price in your market rather than relying on its US listing. Consider the cited Grand Seiko models as near-budget alternatives only if your ceiling has flexibility: the Benelux listing places both above €5,000. None of these comparisons establishes a complete ranking of all GMT watches available in every country.
