The company said the store was closed and the incident was contained; fire officials said the incident was under investigation. The cause—and whether any e-bike battery was involved—has not been established in the reports available.
What happened at the Huntington Beach store?
The Huntington Beach Fire Department responded at about 7:07 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2026, to a reported structure fire at the Rad Power Bikes retail location at Pacific City Mall on Pacific Coast Highway. GeekWire reported on January 20 that Rad described the event as a “thermal incident,” said it was contained and occurred while the store was closed, and said the cause had not been confirmed.
A Huntington Beach Fire Department spokesperson told Bicycle Retailer and Industry News on January 21 that the department had responded to a reported structure fire and its fire investigators were investigating. The department said it could not provide further details about the nature of the incident.
Was an e-bike battery involved?
The reports do not establish the fire’s origin or cause, or confirm that an e-bike or battery was involved. It would be inaccurate to attribute the store fire to a battery based on the separate consumer-product warning issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The CPSC warning was issued before the Huntington Beach fire and applies to three identified battery models. It is relevant safety context, but it is not evidence about what happened at the store.
Which Rad batteries are covered by the CPSC warning?
On November 24, 2025, the CPSC warned consumers about batteries bearing model numbers RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304. The agency says they can unexpectedly ignite and explode, particularly if the battery or harness has been exposed to water and debris. The model number is printed on the back or rear label of the battery, so check that identifier rather than relying on a bike’s name alone. See the CPSC warning for the full notice.

The bike model can help identify whether to check the battery, but the warning’s battery model numbers are the key identifiers.

What should owners of an affected battery do?
- Stop using it and remove it from the bike. The CPSC says to immediately remove a covered battery from the e-bike and stop using it.
- Contact your local household hazardous-waste collection center. Ask whether it accepts hazardous lithium-ion batteries and how to transport the battery safely before bringing it in.
- Do not sell or give it away. Follow local hazardous-waste procedures for disposal rather than passing the battery to someone else.
The CPSC reports 31 fire reports involving the identified batteries, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500. These are figures published by the agency about the warned batteries; they are not an estimate of damage or a count of incidents at the Huntington Beach store. The agency says some reported fires occurred while batteries were not charging and products were not in use or were in storage.
The CPSC warning also includes Rad’s response. The company said its Safe Shield and semi-integrated batteries were not covered by the agency’s statement, said batteries retested by third-party laboratories passed those tests, and described solutions it proposed to the CPSC. That is Rad’s stated position; it does not withdraw the agency’s warning about the three identified battery models.

What is known about the store and the company now?
Rad’s current retail locator lists the Huntington Beach store at Pacific City Mall, Ste. A100, 21010 E. Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach, California 92648. A current directory listing does not establish the store’s condition or operating status at the time of the fire.
For company-service context, Rad’s current support page says Rad Power Bikes, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 on December 15, 2025, and the Rad Power Bikes brand came under new ownership on February 27, 2026. It says claims relating to products bought before December 15, 2025 must be submitted through the bankruptcy process and that the new owner is not obligated to provide warranty or other service for those earlier purchases, though it may consider discretionary policies.
