No clothing brand can be reliably labeled “runs small” or “runs large” across every garment. Sizing can vary by category, cut and collection, so use a measurement chart for the exact item rather than choosing by the label alone. The chart below shows what the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you about brand fit tendencies.
Which clothing brands run big or small?
There is no established, reliable statistic showing how much clothing sizes vary across brands, and the available evidence does not support a definitive ranking of brands from smallest to largest. Size charts are more useful when they identify the garment category, collection and measurement basis. A brand’s “medium” is not a dependable cross-brand measurement by itself.

The Zara distinctions are secondary reporting, not a current Zara-issued sizing policy. The article also associates triangle, square and circle symbols with the lines; check the current product information rather than relying on a symbol or an older collection description alone. A third-party directory can help locate brand guides, but its tendency summaries are observations, not standardized measurements: TRYSHOP brand size charts and fit guides.
Why sizes differ within the same brand
Garment category and cut
A brand may publish different charts for tops, jeans and other categories because the relevant body measurements and garment construction differ. Wrangler’s guide separates categories and describes different T-shirt fits, including oversized and tight-fitting cuts. A roomy cut is an intentional style choice, not necessarily evidence that the brand’s sizing is inconsistent.

Collection, fabric and fit preference
Collections within one brand can have different fit tendencies, as the reported Zara example illustrates. Fabric and a garment’s intended silhouette also affect how it feels on the body. If you are between sizes, there is no universal rule to size up or down: consider the item’s fit notes, fabric and how you want it to sit.

How to choose a size when switching brands
- Measure the body areas the chart requests. Follow the brand’s instructions and measure without clothing if possible. Wrangler says to measure the waist where pants are normally worn, and the hips at the fullest point with the tape parallel to the floor. A soft measuring tape is convenient; Wrangler notes that string and a ruler can also be used. See its measurement and size-chart guidance.
- Open the chart for the exact product category and market. Match your measurements to the relevant chart, not just the size label. Primark describes its US chart as based on body measurements; its conversions and ranges should not be assumed to apply in every market. Check Primark’s US size charts.
- Check whether the numbers describe your body or the garment. Body measurements help match a size to you; garment measurements describe the item itself. Do not compare the two as if they were interchangeable.
- Compare garment measurements with something you own, when available. Angel recommends laying a well-fitting shirt or sweatshirt flat and comparing its width with the chart’s width. Angel says production variation for its apparel can be up to 1/2 inch in either direction; that tolerance is specific to Angel’s guidance, not a general clothing-industry standard. Read Angel’s sizing guidance.
- Use reviews and broad fit reputations only as supporting clues. Look for comments about the same type of item or collection, then give more weight to the current product chart and fit notes. A brand-wide reputation cannot settle the fit of a specific garment.
What to check before ordering
- The chart is for the right country or market and the current product category.
- The measurements are identified as body measurements or garment measurements.
- The product’s cut is consistent with your preference, such as fitted, regular or oversized.
- Any brand or collection tendency is treated as a clue, not a guaranteed sizing rule.
