You can search a backyard for buried coins, jewelry or other lost valuables with a metal detector, but that is different from prospecting for naturally occurring gold or silver. A detector can locate metal; it cannot establish that a yard contains precious-metal deposits or tell you an object’s value. The available official guidance does not establish the odds of finding gold or silver in a typical backyard, so check local geology and land history before spending money on specialist equipment.
First decide what you mean by “treasure”
There are two distinct activities. The USDA Forest Service classifies metal detecting for precious metals as prospecting. It describes treasure trove separately as a non-mineral activity involving valuable items that were purposely hidden. That distinction matters because the applicable access, digging and ownership rules can differ. USDA Forest Service, Rockhounding Guide (June 2017).
| What you hope to find | Activity | What a detector can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Naturally occurring gold or silver | Mineral prospecting | It may indicate buried metal, but a signal alone does not prove the target is gold or silver. |
| Lost coins, jewelry or a deliberately buried cache | Metal detecting for lost or hidden objects | It may locate metal; it does not determine an object’s exact composition, ownership or value. |
Can I find gold in my backyard?
Possibly, but whether natural gold is plausible depends on the site’s geology and history. The official sources cited here do not provide a probability, typical yield or expected dollar value for an ordinary backyard. Treat a find as uncertain, not as an income plan.
Before buying a prospecting detector, check regional geological maps and documented mineral occurrences, then consider the property’s land-use history. Those clues can help you decide whether prospecting is worth exploring, but they cannot guarantee a deposit beneath a particular yard.

Can a metal detector find gold in my yard?
A metal detector is a relevant tool category for prospecting, but the fact that detectors are used for that purpose does not show that a specific yard contains gold or that a consumer model will find it. Queensland lists electronic detectors among hand tools permitted for licensed fossicking; the Forest Service also discusses detector use in prospecting contexts. Neither source tests or endorses a particular consumer model. Queensland Government, fossicking rules (updated July 8, 2024).
If you are comparing detectors, check the manufacturer’s current specifications against your target, site and soil conditions, and look for instruction and support that suit your experience. Do not treat marketing claims as proof of gold identification, guaranteed depth or likely success; the sources here do not establish those claims for any model.

What to check before searching or digging
Permission to enter a yard is not necessarily the only rule that matters. Requirements depend on location, land status, mineral rights or claims, the kind of search and how much disturbance it causes. Because your jurisdiction and parcel are unspecified, no single set of rules can establish whether a particular backyard search is allowed.
- Confirm property boundaries and get the landowner’s permission if you do not own the property. Check for mineral rights, claims and any local ordinances that apply to the site.
- Check local heritage and environmental restrictions before disturbing ground. Do not dig near buried utility services; locate them first using the appropriate local service.
- Look up the current rules for the exact activity: mineral prospecting is not always treated like searching for lost objects.
- Follow any limits on tools, digging depth or disturbance. Fill permitted holes, minimize ground disturbance and remove litter.
United States National Forest System
The Forest Service’s 2017 Rockhounding Guide says detecting for precious metals is prospecting and is not allowed on a mining claim without the claimant’s permission. It advises checking local rules, respecting private property, filling holes and minimizing disturbance. It also says low-impact surface activity may not require a Plan of Operations, while more disturbing work may require Forest Service authorization. This is general agency guidance, not a parcel-specific ruling; check current requirements with the relevant forest office. The guide also says historic artifacts may not be removed from federal lands. USDA Forest Service, Rockhounding Guide.

San Bernardino National Forest example
For that forest, the Forest Service says detecting for gold or silver is prospecting subject to the General Mining Law and describes notice, plan and claim-related requirements. This is a local example, not a rule for every private yard or every state. San Bernardino National Forest: Prospecting and Mining.
Queensland example
Queensland requires a current fossicking licence for fossicking and permits listed hand tools such as metal detectors. Its rules limit digging to 2 metres on land and 0.5 metres in streams, prohibit machinery, and list alluvial gold among collectable materials. The government separately says a fossicking licence is not needed to search for lost treasure or items with a detector; local council rules may still govern access to public beaches and other places. Check the current licence and site requirements before searching. Queensland Government, fossicking rules Queensland Government, fossicking licences and permits (updated August 13, 2026).

U.S. National Park System
Do not assume a public site is open to detecting or digging. The National Park Service says recreational collecting and gold panning are generally prohibited in National Park System units, with limited exceptions. Check the rules for the specific unit before visiting. National Park Service, geology permits.
