FedEx’s 22 Boeing 757-200 Freighter Retirement Dates to 2024

FedEx’s decision to retire 22 Boeing 757-200 freighters dates to 2024. The $157 million noncash impairment and later retirements are separate events.

FedEx decided in 2024 to permanently retire 22 Boeing 757-200 freighters and seven related engines. The company recorded a $157 million noncash impairment charge for the decision, which it described as part of Federal Express’s fleet reduction and modernization strategy. This was not a new 2026 announcement; FedEx reported additional, separate 757 retirements in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026.

Why is FedEx retiring the 757-200 freighters?

FedEx says its fleet changes are intended to improve global network efficiency and better match air-network capacity with anticipated demand. In its fiscal 2026 results release, the company described the later retirement group this way: “These retirements are aligned with the company’s fleet reduction and modernization strategy as the company continues to improve its global network efficiency and better align air network capacity with anticipated demand.” FedEx Corporation, fiscal 2026 results release

FedEx says its aircraft removal decisions may reflect projected reductions in capacity needs or lower operating costs from newer aircraft types. Its stated planning criteria include the global economic outlook and projected shipment volumes, peak-season capacity requirements, new fleet types or permanent retirements, and changes to planned service expansion. These are the company’s reasons and decision factors; the cited filings do not quantify savings attributable to the 22-aircraft retirement.

When did the 22-aircraft decision happen, and what did it cost?

The 22-aircraft decision was made in 2024, not in fiscal 2026. FedEx recorded a $157 million noncash impairment charge in 2024 in connection with permanently retiring the 22 Boeing 757-200s and seven related engines. An impairment charge is an accounting recognition that an asset’s recorded value has been reduced; it is not a cash payment of that amount.

How do the later retirements differ?

FedEx’s subsequent filings describe two distinct retirement groups. They should not be confused with, or added to, the 22-aircraft 2024 decision.

Reporting period Aircraft retired Noncash impairment charge
2024 decision 22 Boeing 757-200s and seven related engines $157 million
Fiscal 2025 12 aircraft: two Boeing 757-200s, seven Airbus A300-600s, and three MD-11s $21 million
Fiscal 2026 10 aircraft: four Boeing 757-200s, one Airbus A300-600, and five MD-11s $23 million

For the fiscal 2026 group, FedEx said eight of the 10 aircraft had already been temporarily idled and were not in revenue service. That status applies to those eight aircraft, not necessarily to the 22 in the 2024 decision. The retirement groups and impairment charges are reported separately in FedEx Corporation’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.

Are the 22 aircraft still flying?

FedEx reported that the 22 were permanently retired, but the cited filing does not establish whether each aircraft was actively flying immediately before the 2024 decision. The company specifically said eight aircraft in the separate fiscal 2026 group had been temporarily idled and were not in revenue service; that information cannot be applied to the 2024 group.

What is replacing the 757-200s?

The filings describe a general fleet reduction and modernization strategy, but do not identify a dedicated one-for-one replacement for the 22 aircraft retired under the 2024 decision. FedEx’s historical account says 757 freighters replaced 727-200s, and discusses modernization that included 777 long-range freighters and planned 767 deliveries at the time of publication in 2013. That history provides context, not evidence that a particular aircraft type directly replaced the 22 retired in 2024. FedEx Newsroom, June 21, 2013
