For most U.S. individuals who file on a calendar-year basis, the federal filing and payment deadline for a 2025 income tax return was April 15, 2026. That date is distinct from the 2026 estimated-tax installments and from special deadlines for fiscal-year filers or taxpayers covered by IRS relief. Exceptions depend on the filing year, tax year, location, and taxpayer status. These dates cover federal individual income taxes, not state deadlines or every business, estate, or trust obligation.
When are federal taxes due?
The Internal Revenue Service set April 15, 2026, as the ordinary federal deadline for most calendar-year individuals to file their 2025 income tax return and pay any tax due. The tax year is 2025; 2026 is the year the return was filed. See the IRS individual filing guidance.
If you are asking about a different tax year, do not assume the same date applies: check the IRS instructions for that return year and your filing circumstances.
When is the tax deadline if I need more time?
An eligible taxpayer could request an automatic extension for a 2025 calendar-year return by April 15, 2026. The extended filing deadline was October 15, 2026. An extension gives more time to file the return, not more time to pay the tax owed. The IRS explains the extension process in its April 15 filing and payment reminder.

Filing versus paying: what changes with an extension?
| Obligation | Ordinary 2025-return date | With a valid extension |
|---|---|---|
| File the 2025 federal return | April 15, 2026 | October 15, 2026 |
| Pay tax owed on the 2025 return | April 15, 2026 | Still due April 15, 2026 |
The October date applies to filing, not payment. It is not a general deadline for all taxpayers or tax obligations.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due?
Estimated-tax installments are separate from the annual return deadline. The ordinary dates for 2026 estimated-tax payments were:
| Installment | Due date |
|---|---|
| First | April 15, 2026 |
| Second | June 15, 2026 |
| Third | September 15, 2026 |
| Fourth | January 15, 2027 |
These are the IRS’s ordinary 2026 installment dates, not a statement that every individual must make estimated payments. See the IRS estimated-tax FAQs for payment rules. If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the payment is generally due the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

Does the deadline differ for fiscal-year taxpayers?
Yes. The April 15 date is the ordinary date for calendar-year individual filers. A fiscal-year individual generally must file Form 1040 by the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of the tax year. That means the applicable date depends on the taxpayer’s fiscal year rather than the usual calendar-year schedule. IRS Publication 509, Tax Calendars, explains tax-calendar rules.

Disaster relief is limited to the taxpayers, locations, obligations, and dates described in the applicable IRS notice. It does not automatically apply to everyone in a state or to every tax obligation.

For example, IRS relief for specified Nebraska counties affected by 2026 storms postponed certain filing and payment obligations to February 1, 2027. The relief did not extend payment of tax on 2025 returns that had been due April 15, 2026. Check the current IRS notice for the Nebraska disaster to confirm whether your location and obligation are covered. Taxpayers with overseas, combat-zone, or other special circumstances should consult the rules or individualized notice that applies to their status.
What if I cannot pay the tax I owe?
Do not ignore the balance. The IRS lists online, bank-account, card, and mail payment methods, and offers payment plans for taxpayers who cannot pay in full. Interest and penalties can continue until the balance is paid. Review the IRS payment options and online payment plan application to find an option that fits your situation.
