The FAA’s Boeing 787 pilot-seat directive was issued in 2024, not 2026. Airworthiness Directive AD 2024-16-14 took effect on August 21, 2024, and required airlines to inspect and, where needed, repair specified cockpit-seat equipment on certain 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft. The agency acted after reports of occupied seats moving horizontally without command, a hazard that could trigger abrupt flight-control inputs.
What prompted the FAA directive?
The FAA’s rule describes five reports received by June 2024. The first came in March. In that event, uncommanded movement of the captain’s seat caused a control-column input that disconnected the autopilot. The aircraft descended rapidly until the first officer took control. The FAA said multiple passengers were injured, some seriously. Boeing later provided the FAA four additional reports of uncommanded horizontal seat movement, with the most recent in June. The FAA attributed three events to loose forward/aft rocker-switch caps beneath spring-loaded cover guards on the backs of the captain’s and first officer’s seats. The caps were cracked or had become unbonded. In the other two cases, the agency said its investigation was ongoing; the rule does not establish a common cause for all five events.
A dislodged cap could be pressed by the cover guard, producing unintended, sustained seat movement. If the seat is occupied, that movement can cause abrupt flight-control inputs and an in-flight upset. The FAA summarized the hazard this way: “A rocker switch with a dislodged rocker switch cap, if depressed by the rocker switch cover guard, can cause unintended and sustained movement of the seat.”

Which Boeing 787s and seats were covered?
AD 2024-16-14 applied to certain Boeing 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft fitted with specified Ipeco captain’s or first-officer’s seat part numbers. It was not a blanket finding that every 787 had the same seat equipment or was affected. Airlines and maintenance providers had to determine applicability by aircraft and seat configuration using the directive’s applicability provisions. The FAA rule and applicability details.
What did the FAA require airlines to do?
The directive prescribed aircraft-maintenance actions, not a passenger inspection. For covered seats, the work included inspections and tests of the rocker switches and their guards, followed by bonding or replacement when a defect was found. The incorporated maintenance reference was Ipeco Service Bulletin 380-25-06, Issue 03, dated July 17, 2024; the regulatory text also specified exceptions to that bulletin.

- Inspect switch-cover assemblies for cracks and proper function.
- Perform cap pull tests.
- Bond loose caps or replace affected switches and parts as required.
- Mark seats in accordance with the directive.
- Observe limits on installing affected seats unless the required marking condition was met.
Most required inspection and corrective actions were due within 30 days after the directive’s August 21, 2024 effective date. The rule allowed specified bonding or replacement work to be deferred while the aircraft operated under Master Minimum Equipment List item 25-11-01-0, but no later than 120 days after the effective date. Was the pilot-seat issue linked to LATAM Flight 800?
The reporting supports a careful distinction. The Associated Press reported that Boeing’s earlier advisory memo was issued in response to LATAM Flight 800, and that Boeing described the memo as a precautionary measure. That was voluntary manufacturer guidance recommending that airlines inspect motorized cockpit-seat switches during their next maintenance and including instructions such as disabling seat motors. The FAA’s later rule is a separate, binding directive; it recounts the reports and resulting hazard but does not conclude that every reported event, or the directive’s entire scope, had one confirmed cause. How does this differ from the 2016 787 seat directive?
The FAA issued a separate directive in 2016 for certain 787-8 aircraft after a report of uncommanded seat movement attributed to a horizontal-actuator failure. That action required repetitive tests and installation of new seat assemblies. The 2024 action addressed a different reported mechanism: rocker-switch caps that could become loose or dislodged beneath their guards. In its 2024 rule, the FAA estimated that 158 U.S.-registered airplanes were affected. The agency estimated $85 per airplane and $13,430 total for inspection, cap pull testing and seat marking. It separately estimated up to $4,855 per seat for replacement and up to $292 per seat for cap bonding.
